Non-Desi Options:

Chaat
Yogurt salad/raita
Deserts:
Cake
Trifle
Pudding
Pie

that's a cool idea but some people are already bringing desi food and appetizers. The host just emailed me and asked to bring Italian.

Actually there was a thread with some yummy lasagne recipe in it... i believe it was the silver falcon/cooking thread. I think Chips provided a recipe for Lasagne with bechamel sauce. THere is also a recipe for making it the regular way with pasta sauce/beef cheese.

I do lasagne the following way....
1 pack of lasagne sheets - boil them and set aside
I saute beef in onions/spices/chopped tomato till brown and smell has gone away. The trick is to season the beef well for good flavor. I would add italion seasoning (oregano/parlsey/basil etc)To that I add a bottle of pasta sauce (like PRego) and also about 1/4 cup chopped parsley.
Also you need 1 pack of mozzarella cheese shredded, as well as some parmesan. Sometimes I mix mozzarella & cheddar together. Also 1 small container (8 oz ) ricotta cheese. I place ricotta in a bowl, add 1-2 small eggs and beat it together. I normally add a little salt/black pepper/italion seasonings to the ricotta mix for extra kick.
Now start layering in a pan. In the bottom of a pan(i use foil), pour out a little sauce then make 1 layer of lasane noodles. Add a layer of the beef mixture, then spoon some riccotta mixture on top evenly......and then add some shredded cheese and repeat layer again. The top layer should end with noodles. Spoon some sauce over it & sprinkle with parmesan cheese. Cover loosely with foil & bake in the over for about 35-40 mins on medium heat, till hot & bubbly. Serve.

I use Prego Spaghetti sauce actually, as it's easier to buy bottled, but if you make marinara at home, that's even better. I think typically the bottles sauces have a touch of sweetness to them for some reason. I do like homemade marinara sauce much better, but too much work
