I'm trying to decide what Pakistani dish to bring to a potluck of international guests here in the US. I make a great karhai murghi, or I could make alu ki tikkiya. I have a superb tahiri recipe, but sometimes it comes out and sometimes it doesn't...Or should I do kababs of some sort? What else? Any ideas?

OK -- I'm thinking aloud here...

The problem with desi food is that you need either rice or roti to go with most if it. A kabab without a naan is an underdressed guest at the party, you know? I can get wholewheat tortillas here which are a fine stand-in for roti, but people at a party aren't going to manage them properly.

So how about this: I take something like a nice matar-qeema, spread it on a roti, pile a line of dhania on one edge, then roll it up, and slice into inch and a quarter spirals, secured with a toothpick, stand them on end (so you can see the spiral) and voila: DESI SUSHI!

Anybody done this?

my non desi friends loved kabobs rolled in a paratha, you can have chutney, onions, lettuce raita and such to dress it up and let everyone chose how they want to fix it. It's something more people are familiar with and so that worked well. Another big hit was briyani, so I say just make a pot of that and try not to make anything too spicy.

btw wheat tortillas is a much healtier alternative to desi breads, my dad switched and lost a bit of weight because of little changes like that in his everday diet.

Don't mess with Texas...

Stressed

I love chicken karahi.......but I think that it's best enjoyed with either roti or chawal.

I used to attend an international school and one day my art teacher, who was American, decided to have a party and she wanted me to bring a dish with curry. So I took chicken karahi for the class party. And although it was delicious.....nobody really ate it. Because it's hard to eat the chicken and masala/curry without rice and roti. So that might be something to consider.

I like the kabab idea.

What about these ideas:

chaat? Like a yogurt chaat or chaat papri?

chicken wings marinaded in desi mala?

samosay?

gulab jamun?

biryani?
