Hey there guppies! I am back yet again for some of your awesome help you keep supplying me..

The topic now is how to keep certain foods fresh and their shelf life. So, I was wondering as I looked at the rotten hara dhania in my fridge what precautions could I have taken to make it last longer. My grandmother told me to wash the hara dhania when I first get home from the grocery store and let it air dry on a big paper towel. Then take another paper towel after the dhania is dry and wrap it in it then put it in a plastic bag. Every time you sense moisture in the bag wipe it off. This really worked for me. How about other foods? Lets start off with meat..

When I buy chicken, beef and other meats and freeze them in an air tight plastic bag how long from the day I put them in my freezer do I have till I must cook them and the day throw out? I mean the latest I can keep em in my freezer till I absolutely have to cook them? After the meat is cooked to my liking, how many days can I keep in the refrigerator sealed properly to the last day I have to eat them?

As for veggies, how long can all types of veggies stay in the fridge? I mean all of them: carrots, tomatoes, dhanis, pudina, etc. I know each will vary.

Now as for potatoes, can I still use them when they get squishy? I mean, I could peel off the rotten layer and still use it right? Or would that not be right? As for onions, I usually use them before they have a chance to get rotten and if they ever do I use the half that is still pretty fresh and I know doing that can't be bad..

Thanks!

Sorry Phool, I didn't notice this.

I make fried onions and they stay fresh in the fridge in a jar for more than a week. Sometimes I puree fried onions in oil and that stays fresh also.

Very good thing to have in fridge, curry cooked in minutes.

For dhaniya I've started to wrap mine in a damp kitchen towel, and that really works.

What I'd like to know is - what's the best way to store carrots? Mine go soft in the fridge.

Ya I do the same for dhania, only I dont wash it before putting it in the paper towel.
Actually I do the paper thing with some other fruits too, so it absorbs the moisture. Like grapes, strawberries. Because I think its the moisture that makes them rot quickly??
For knowing when to throw vegetables out, I think their appearance will usually reveal their state, whether they have gone bad or not. Like for a tomato, if you see its gone all mushy on the outside and has blotches etc. A general rule they say is, when in doubt, throw it out!

I recently started storing tomatoes at room temperature & they last longer & after 2,3 days of storage I only need half of the amount required in any recipe & it tastes just as right with less tomatoes. So I save some money & space in the fridge. Just make sure you store in brown paper bags.

Also if you store onions in the fridge they'll easily last 10 days & since they'll be cold when you cut them you won't get teary eyed.
