Do you send out food to your neighbours / friends??? - Page 2

It is part of the tradition of the place I live in. Everyone send's food to everyone else. Especially where I live there so many Pakistani families like literally so many. Atleast 9 8 houses on the street, there are Pakistanis living in them and everyone knows each other very well. So even if it is not eid or ramadan we always get food. Also ladies have made committies and they have once a month one dish gatherings and they go out for lunches and dinners etc. We are really into the food sharing thing here in AR.

^ It's nice, isn't it, to live in a food sharing community. I mean sometimes u can get home and wonder what to cook when u get a knock at the door and stare a hot casserole in the face.

Awww Aishooo.....that sounds so nice.....

..... i'm going to move to a predominantly desi place if that's the case... could save me from trying to blow up the kitchen... any recommendations...??

You know something funny, it was dad's birthday and we were having normal lunch at home because we had planned the surprise "nice" dinner etc and cake for dinner time and we are all eating when the bell rings and my aunty from across the street has sent her maid with cake that she baked herself!

We get lot's of food lol

Also yesterday an indian aunty friend of mom's had sent dhai bhalley pani puri and sambhav etc to our home which I gobbled up.

Maroushyyy it is nice. I love AR. It is a great community to live in and everyone knows everywhere and literally all year around our gatherings and events etc are so lively because their are so many Pakistanis and so nice people here!

^ Thats the one good thing I can think of about living amongst a lot of pakistanis. The reason why I would NOT like to live amongst so many is bcos there would b a neighbourhood watch scheme going on!

Oh ofcourse there is always the flip side of the coin, there are a lot of politics as well here. Also everyone does have a nazar on the other person and the other person's family. Where you are going for holiday, where you are holding your parties, where your kids go to school/uni etc, this and that. A lot of unhealthy competition going on as well. However where there is bad there is good too and many people here are decent, come from nice families and in general nice, warm and friendly.

some friend of mums sends really nice briyani on occasions........esp in ramadan,,,,its weird how pleasantries and food parcels are exchanged readily at ramadan, but then no one bats an eyelid at their neighbours during the rest of the year

We have just one Pakistani family across the street from us who are also great family friends. The uncle and aunty grew up in Malaysia so they are always cooking amazinggg Malay food which they send over.. even regular Pakistani food, and so does my mom everytime she cooks something special like Nihari or Haleen or her famous pakora karhi. Especially during Ramadan, almost everyday we send food and receive them, and when one of the parents are out of the state or country, both families take really good care of each other. We also have these Arab neighbors who are just as sweet and always send us Arabic food (which I don't like AT ALL) but it's so nice of them.

Whenever we have dawats, my mom makes sure to cook pakora karhi which EVERYONE loves, and she makes sure to cook ALOT because every aunty wants to take it back home. My mom's really sweet in terms of sending food, she gives everyone to take back cartons (of those yogurts haha) filled with food so they don't have to cook the next day.
My inlaws have all american neighbors and there's one family next door who they are very good friends with, and those people just LOVE biryani and samosas.. so my mil makes sure to send it to them. In the beginning of every Ramadan, they send my mil a huge bag of those tiny plastics so she can send them samosas everyday.. lol.. they know it's cooked every evening before iftar.

RH...im disappointed in you!! NO CHEESE N CRACKERS?

At parties we hand out goody "plates" of food if we have too much leftover. Sometimes we will give some to our neighbors as well.

It's bcos they get the same reward as a person who is fasting if the person breaks their fast with their food!

Pareezay, where do you live? Your neighbours sound cool. We have a similar set up when my parents go abroad, my siblings have food deliveries by neighbouring families who send food round for youngest child in the house, even if he is 22! And my mum does the same for others, usually saying the food is for "little" [girl or boy's name] even though they r grown up and able to fend for themselves. And please can you post the recipe for your mums pakora karhi, I am intrigued.

I'd never hand out cheese and crackers - they are MUCH TOO GOOD TO BE SHARED...

We often send food to our neighbour across the street, who is a 85 year old granny and like a mother/grandma to us.. She's half Dutch and half Indonesian.. So she's fond of spicey food..

We also send food to my chachu who is married to a Dutchy.. So practically no desi khana over there.. Whenever my mom makes a dish which my chachoo likes a lot.. She never forgets to send him too..

And sometimes we also send food to other Pakistani family's we know..

It's such big of a secret that even I don't know the recipe

You know, during my wedding last summer, alot people were over from my hubby's side and my mom cooked karhi, till this day they tell everyone how they have never had that delicious of karhi before. Infact my sis's mil (also from my hubby's side) says she attempts to make it every friday and sends it to my mil and other people, and they tell her, its STILL not like her mum's.. haha. I think they expect me to make it when Im there but I tell them I don't know her recipe! Even I don't like anyone else's cooked karhi, my mom's is totally different.

We have a mosque to the right of our house.. and they got so much food yesterday because there's no one home to have leftovers.

We have 4 Pakistani families and they're all really nice.. and then 1 Syrian family, 1 Emirati widow..

The widow sends mounds (and I mean mounds) of Kabsa (chicken/meat and rice) and I feel horrible for passing it on because there's no one home and I dont have meat
