I know Pulao could be Chanay ka pulao etc. but I am talking about gosht walay chawal here.
So, what's the difference between biryani (chicken, mutton or beef, any) and pulao (again any meat)? Is it how you cook it that defines what you call it or s/th else?

its the masalas used, the taste etc.
biryani is usually colorful, while Pulao is more brown in color
i prefer pulao
Was I not supposed to say that?

It's the masalas plus Biryani is usually spicy, Pulao is not.

I like pulao because it has zarda along with it.
I like meat biryani the most because it has alus with it.

Also, another 'critical' difference between the two is that in most pulaaos the meat is cooked in water with various whole spices like cardamom, cloves, cinnamon stick, pepper corns etc...and then the rice is cooked in that stock. (most of the times). But in biryani, one typically layers the meat and boiled rice alternately etc.
In pulao we normally use whole spices, while in biryani we use whole spices+ground spices and saffron etc.

Ok so pulao is the one cooked in stock and has brown color. And for biryani, rice and saalan are cooked seperately till you make layers and add color etc.
got that
Thanks peoplaan

some biryanis have aloo in them, like sindhi biryani...
pulao i think u can sometimes mix with zarda (sweet rice) just for a kick, since pulao is usually salty and not as spicy

Both pulao and biryanis have many kinds of variants.
In biryani we have sindhi biryani, hyderabadi biryani, delhi biryani, pulao biryani, bombay biryani!
In pulao different ingredient are used by people depending upon where they belong to.

Kalay channa's pulao is as tasty as a meat one. Only has to cook it in a proper way.

Kalay chanay ka pulao??? I am learning new things here. I am familiar with sufaid chanay ka pulao but I guess it's same thing just different chanay.
But with kalay chanay, don't we have "kalay chanay ka saalan (shorba)" serving on top of rice? again different ways of different people I guess

I'm not a fan of biryani..... sometimes i crave it, and when it comes to eating it, it's such an anti-climax, cos i then realise how much i don't like it
Give me meat pilao anyday

Everyone likes pulao more than biryani! Biryani is so over-rated then?

The best biryani is cooked in Karachi only! No other place in the world can match it.
