1. Since i'm quite lazy/dont have time/short on space etc, I have taken to storing my shalwar kamezes etc in a shopping bag. (this is in addition to the bursting closet, 2 drawers full, 2 big garbage bags full...shooot i gotta lotta clothes ) since i live in a basement, will this be bad for the clothes? will they start smelling or something? these are mostly casual/lawns etc....

2. No matter how "Short/petite" i get, my pants are alwyas too long...getting them all tailored is quite expensive, and i dont have a sewing machine...any other alternative? i mean other than using safety pins to hem em up

1- if its even slightly damp, they will attract moths/odours. if they are in sealed plastic bags, they should be ok.
2- you can buy hem tape. cheap. easy. effective. google it.

they have these bags, I think they are available at bed bath and beyond, its lik a hugeeeeeee ziploc hehe u put ur clothes in the seal in and they have this hole in it, u put ur vaccum in it to suck at the air out and cap the hole when the bag is all small and stuff. I do that, takes very little space, and clothes don't smell, maybe get wrinkly. For your pants, either roll em up, or get a sewing machine for a long term alternative.

Sara, get a portable closet made of fabric....they sell of $20 at Walmart, and they zip up keeping your clothes in good condition in hangers. You can buy the closet moth/humidity control which will absorb any extra humidity as well as keep your clothes smelling fresh.

Regarding long pants, the iron on hem tape is awesome. Or, you can get the length altered by a drycleaners for $5 a piece.

I usually hem my pants myself with a thread and needle, its really not that hard and with some practice Im actually pretty good at it now. I keep a sewing kit around all the time and just make sure my "tanka" doesnt show on the outside when Im hemming. Im also one of those wierd sizes that doesnt seem to fit in short or regular.

For storage, Ive started to use vacuum bags. Ive sorted my clothes according to seasons and then style: casual, formal, partywear. These things are AWESOME! You store them and suck the air out so the clothes dont get musty or damp. Once the air is sucked out, your clothes are not only protected, the vacuum reduces the overall size of the bag so you can store twice as much as you would otherwise.

Get them, they're cheap and available at Wal Mart.

Exactly what I was going to suggest as well PSquared , I have the same issue with most of my pants .. too long ... hemming is the best way .. tapes often come off and can cause an embarassment ... the hemming stays for a good few months ..

Vacuum Bags are the best ... no fear of moths , fungus due to moisture , stink .... it wont take much space either ...

Most of the places here charge like $8+ per pair of pants ...hence i need a long term solution. Maybe i should look into a sewing machine.. now id nee dto know how to use it

hey Sara..i got that hand held sewing machine for 30 something dollars..it is quite good for hemming sides and such stuff...you can try that

Wow...i wish I had opened this thread earlier..

i am so crushed right now, i had stored my wedding clothes (well one jahez outfit, my valima lengha and the duputta of my wedding dress) in their boxes. I usually open em about 1-2 a year, so today i decdied to do it on a whim....
the jahez outfit (an anarkali) is like totally destroyed..when i took it out, it STANK and it was wet.....when I shook it out on an old sheet, so much dirt came off..i dont even wanna touch it....it's as if it was submerged in rain water or something...tho i have no idea how taht could have happened.

My valima dress isn't wet but it still has an odour.

Luckily the wedding duputta is somehwat okay, maybe b/c the fabric and kaam are totally different (higher quality?)

I have no idea why it got wet...i've posted before about flooding issues in my place (long story) but there's no way water could've gotten where the clothes were kept.

But still im kinda sad. are as much as i've whined abt em, they're still my wedding outfits and were really nice.

OMG, I would be crushed if I found my outfits had gotten messed up like that! It will cost some $, but maybe take them to a high-end dry cleaner and get an estimate on what sort of restoration work they might be able to do?

Alright. Another little problem.

Seems like everytime I buy a sweater, the first time i wear it, little "burrs" appear on the underarm/sideof the sweater. In fact it happens alot with almost every sweater or shirt i buy. Does this happen to anyone else? anything to lessen the harm? I mean besides buying not-cheap-mass-produced stuff?

You can buy a little fabric shaver/pilling machine to remove the little pills. Unless you you start buying unsynthetic materials that is the only viable option.

The machines aren't expenisve.
