The first time that you cooked for hubby after the wedding, what did you make? Did you go all out crazy with the biryanis, kormas, pai etc or try to keep it sweet n simple? Also, did you cook separately three times a day? Any mishaps?
I'm thinking of creating an entire month's menu before I get married and writing down all the recipes in order so it goes as smoothly as possible...but i'm curious about your experiences

Why a whole month? What if you change your mind and decide you don't want to cook/eat that. I don't think anyone plans out a menu for a whole month. Start with a weekly menu perhaps, that way you can do your food shopping around that.
OMG!!!

I made bhindi gosht and it would have been a disaster if my father in law hadn't helped me in the kitchen. The next day my father in law left for Punjab and I tried to make chicken pulao, it was more like a rice halwa.. so hubby n I went out and bought pretty much all the recipe books available in Karachi.
We spent the first month reading recipes and buying all the spices mentioned in there.. now thats anotehr story that I had to ask guppies for help on how to use jaifal javatri.
and no my cooking hasn't improved :$
take it easy.. I don;t think you need to make a menu for whole month.. wont you be going for parties and all that for newly weds? Relax and put the cookin aside. you got the rest of your life to cook for him!

^ exactly!
plus, take out can be so much easier! i think i cooked for him a year after we got married- it was probably burgers or something. i'm getting better, but man, i have so little interest in it. its a real uphill battle for me.

whoa...i dont know if we'll be able to wait that long. cuz i'm not livin with the in laws so there's no one to help out...its just me n him. i dont think i'll feel right sittin at home/job searching and ordering out alll the time while he works all day. the month long menu is so i don't end up boring him by cooking the same things each week. obv i'm not gonna stick to it exactly but atleast i'll have some good recipes to refer to in case i can't think of anything else.

The first thing I made was daal chawal...and that too because there was nothing else to cook...
I burnt the daal, and when we ate it it had that burnt aroma to it....rice was fine....he never said anything...neither back then nor now years later(and I love him for this... ), although I think I have improved over the years...
I had many many cooking mishaps but it never mattered .....We all learn from our mistakes...
So dont worry too much..You will get a hang of everything once you start cooking. You can definitely start collecting recipes which you like because once you are on your own and have to cook, you will really enjoy all the experimenting in the kitchen...and would want to try new things....
All the best...

haha thats me except i do feel right. though i have started cooking more now and weve been married a yr now. for the first few months i pretty much never cooked and he never complained.
theres no reason for u to make a whole months menu. u can always order out or go out to eat. even if u dont want to, why would u make a WHOLE MONTH's menu. im sure there will be times when either one of u will want to eat something specific.
start by getting recipes for easy dishes and later on u can try out some of the more difficult things.
I'm better than you and you know it. P.S. I purposely made this bright to annoy you.

^ Then you will obviously move on to Beans on the toast, and then progress to Jacket potatoes in the microwave with baked beans from a can topping, naturally???

The first meal I made was spaghetti bologonese, as he'd heard everyone raving about it. It was even mentioned in my brother's wedding speech.

^ cute!
i didn't feel weird or odd about not cooking the first year- i mean, its not a big deal either way to us. yes, its a lot more economical cooking than eating out, which is why i'm trying to do more of it now, but i'm also working and frankly, we like to try new restaurants, so it works out nicely.
maybe try learning the basics first and then you can play around with them as time goes on and you discover his likes and dislikes.

yeah. i guess the month long menu thing surprised people huh. obv we'll be eating out alot and those post-wedding dawats will keep us busy too, but for some reason i see all the gals around me learning to cook wayy before they even find a guy to get married to so i felt a bit un-prepared. thus the month long menu.
i already have alotta cook books, just in case, but i haven't actually practiced a single recipe thanks for calming my fears tho. i guess i've still got a while before aunties can start wondering why my house doesn't smell like masalas n garlic all the time. hehe

in a way it's better if you start from scratch after you get married...that way you can learn to make something according to his taste, IF he's the type of person who is patient.
i didn't know how to cook before I got married, the way i learned was asking my mother in law and my mother for their recipes, writing it all down and doing it... also asking for help on GS helped alot

i cooked pulao and chicken tandoori for him and his family.
im blessed that my husband ONLY eats boneless chicken salan and white rice, and italian food because that's pretty much what's cooked in his house everyday, for lunch and dinner. i always joke with my mil that wow, you guys have NO grocery to do and no tension over what to cook, haha. however, he doesn't complain about any kind of food, he says alhumdulillah and eats it.
now HE is blessed that i LOVE to cook and eat something new every now and then. im big on desi food especially daal chawal, biryani, bhindi, etc and in the past one year, he has gotten used to it as well because i told him, sorry but im not surviving on pasta, chicken and rice.. how boring.
i still see him reaching for those 5 glasses of water and watery eyes when eating my biryani but doesn't complain. i see him gulping down the bhindi and i just sit there very amused.. lol.
i do make it a point to make his favorite pasta, etc when he visits but most of the time, we eat out. im in the process of working out a menu for when we start living together, im thinking i can alternate between my desi food and his italian stuff.. but no chicken and rice for sure.
Choose your battles wisely.
Not everyone is worth wasting time over.

I confess i dont know how to make rotiyaan. i can make all the difficult dishes but rotiyan - i am trying to convince him to pick a nice brand of rotiyaan so afterwards he can get use to of it.
they make so many frozen nans, roityaan i mean they are there to be used as well right?
