Don't ask that man for his daal recipe, he is a designer lunghi thief! He has paid his wife to big up the non-existent daal recipe, it's an ego boosting scam.

Ok here's the recipe:
1/2 cup yellow moong daal
1/4 cup pink masoor daal
1/4 cup chana daal
1 tbs arhar (toor) daal
Wash and soak in water for half hour.
Fry an onion sliced, when golden, add 1 tsp crushed garlic and 1 tsp crushed ginger, 4-5 kari patta, 1 sliced jalapeno, haldi, zeera, red chilli powder, 1 tbs assorted shan masalas such as karahi masala + meat masala (trust me, this adds the zing), 1 tomato chopped and bhuno quickly. Add daals and pressure cook on med-high. Make sure there's at least 5-6 cups water otherwise the moong daal with become really thick. When pressure cooker "seeti" blows, lower flame and cook for 15 mins.
For tarka, fry a small onions, slit green chillies and just a tsp of those assorted masalas and 1 tsp zeera. Pour over daal. Done.
Make sure the daal is creamy in texture. It will be spicy and tastes awesome with buttered naans.
Trust me, I can't make it as well as the dude himself. I just can't get it.

Oh thanks a lot. But we do a similiar one already and we add all daals in equal qauntities (mash as well) and we call it punch mail daal.
Thanks anyway. I will give it a try on the weekend and offer it to my hindu landlord.
But I do not have pressure cooker!

Sorry one question, why are you double frying the daal? One at the beginning and the other at the end? And then I can not afford to eat with buttered naans! I will go with simple plain rice.

first time you bhoono it, second time is the tarkaa.
Taste comes when your masala has 3-4 diff types of shaan masalas in the initial part of bhoonoing.
Your daal dish should have the texture of haleem at the end.

I made daal this way last night and it was a big hit for both hubs and me. Hubs said he liked daal after a long time I only had biryani and paya nehari masalas at home so i added those alongwith some garam masala. I also didnt think the daal needed tarka so i skipped that step. Hubs said it tasted like haleem.

Ira I am happy that my concoction is being approved by another family . Tarka is more of a personal taste thing I guess so you can do without that. But try that on a smaller portion of daal next time just to compare.
Sara, I think that you can cook it a normal pot, it will just take a longer time.
