Everybody makes up/breaks up via text message... or FB...or Twitter..
C'mon, get with the times, it's the 21st century.... we don't believe in face to face conversations anymore!

did she ask for the reason that why is he breaking up?
if no then the chances are your friend is already a psychotic jerk and she was looking for reasons to leave him, and he presented her a reason himself.
ask him to not mingle his personal life with the professional one and with that moral> move on.

McPendo,
Does your friend also jokingly pretend that he's dead? Does he jokingly pretend he'll take his life? Does he jokingly pretend he has a serious illness?
Hmm, your friend either has a strange sense of humor......OR......these little "tricks" of his ALSO reflect an underlying need for attention that could possible stem from insecurity.
Perhaps your friend jokingly told his girlfriend that the relationship was over...........because he secretly wanted to her her say "Noooooo.......Nahin..........please don't leave me. I love you so much.......I can't live without you. You mean the world to me. Don't ever say this to me again or I'll die. I'll never find such a charming and handsome guy like you. Don't leave me." And by reacting in such a manner.........the girl would have "boosted" your friend's ego. And he would secretly think to himself........."Wow, I am such a stud, this girl is crazy about me."......while trying to hide his flattered smile and attempting to calm her down.
^^^ And then it probably shocked your friend when she didn't react as he secretly hoped she would. OR.......I could be totally wrong here and your friend never had such twisted intentions............and simply has a bad sense of humor.
In any case, I suggest your friend contemplate on his sense of humor before inflicting it upon elephants and humans for that matter.

^True-dat!
Common sense is not commonly found..........it's hard to find it everywhere.
Your poor friend. He is fortunate that at least YOU are a devoted and defensive fan of his humor. You truly are a good friend, McPendo. I applaud your loyalty..........such loyalty takes courage! You truly deserve the "Best Friend of the Year" award. And to cheer up your friend........I think you both should tour the country and do stand-up comedy together. You could be the Two Stooges. And to increase your animal viewer ratings..........you both might want to practice at the zoo first. Start with the elephants. They might toss you both a few peanuts.

Oh Pendu Ji............you are way too kind. But why invite a third party at all to steal your thunder? You know the saying, "Three's a crowd."
And besides......I do not possess the comic genius that you and your buddy have been blessed with. Seriously, I'm not good at comedy. One should at least understand comedy if they are going to to be a stand-up comedian. And poor me.........I can't even understand the humor in your friend's joke. Was that a joke? Or was it a trick? Was it acting? Was it a psychological disorder? See....what I mean? I'm way too analytical; I'll just end up butchering the "joke." I have yet to understand the dynamics of this much-appreciated art. I don't have the potential to be a comedian.
But nevertheless, i will encourage you. The show must go on, Moe and Curly.
