Ok, so I can understand changing the oil every 3000 miles (or whatever your manufacturer recommends), but why change it every 3 or so months? For example, let's say that you change your car's oil and then don't drive it for 3 months, isn't it the same as the oil sitting on the store's shelf for all this time? I know that stores don't throw away the oil that's been on the shelf for more than 3 months, and as I far as I can remember, there is no expiration date for engine oil, so why go by the months and not by the miles?
Don't argue with ignorants. They will first drag you down to their level and then beat you with their experience.

The "used" oil thats in the engine doesn't have same composition as "oil on shelves", used oil contains some 'burnt/oxidised' components hence the oil will deteriorate may be not as bad to change it in 3 months though.

They say either 3 months or 3000 miles (or 5000) which ever comes first.

always go by manufacturer's recommendation specially when its under warranty. Modern cars are extending the oil change cycle to even 9000miles and more

the 3 month time is not for an idle sitting car. Its for a car that is being used on a consistent basis.
The point is, that if the car is used on a consistent basis for 3 months, then even if it has done 1500 or 2000 miles, the oil would be tainted because of constant usage.
An idle sitting car would not have any tainted oil, hence doesnt need an oil change.

Car manuals in the UK have stated in their manuals for years that oil changes should be done every 12,000 miles OR 12 months under normal use.
Indeed, a lot of cars on the market there now state oil changes every 18,000 miles or 18 months.

12K is a big number - u sure u r not mixing miles with kilometers for UK market? or is that recommendation based on synthetic oil usage?
