My company offers a program where employees can buy used pickup trucks below market value.
I have seen one in their database which I have my eyes set on . It is Ford F 150
it is 2007 model ( 2007 Ford F150 Supercab 2WD XLT 163WB 4DR Pickup ) with 140 K miles on it.
I need it for my landscaping projects in my backyard and my high schooler kid can use it as a ride to and from school. That will also give me peace of mind from the perspective that he is a teenage driver and he will be safe enough in that truck.
They are asking 8000 dollars for it. I have looked on Kelly Blue Book and at dealers. The price my company is asking is significantly lower but the mileage is also significantly higher than on the trucks being offered by those dealers. I also looked on craigslist , cars.com , the same trucks on those sites have max 40 K miles but the price range is somewhere from 12 to 15 thousand dollars.
Any used truck/car experts out there who can give me some insight as to whether I will be better off , if I buy this truck at this price ?
I am a man with a plan. A plan to live a simple , fulfilling life.

I always wanted a pick up truck.... a ford... or a dodge... or a chevy...
140K Mileage? Hmmmm, the ones i can see on the net have a mileage of around 40K, and they're selling for around $19,000.....
What colour is the truck-to-be? That could be the real deal breaker.... you don't want to cramp your son's eshtyle...

Mirch bhai,
I'm not an expert on trucks, but just based on your own research from craigslist and other sources, it seems like your company has priced the truck a little more than what I would pay (may be $6000 is what I would pay).
If you look at the ratio of mileage (40K:140K) and the ratio of prices (14K:8k), the price seems to be somewhat inflated. Also, you can heuristically base your decision on an annual estimate of mileage. If you estimate an average of 25K miles a year, this truck is almost 5 years old. So, you can lookup the value of a 5 year old truck to get a better handle on what you should be paying for the truck.
Again, these are just suggestions - not expert opinion by any means.

Personally, anything American Motor that crosses 100k mileage is asking for investment on top of the cost. I would be careful...

140k miles in 2-3 years !! Thats a lot of driving Ford vehicles typically start giving problems as the miles pile up. How long do you intend keeping the truck for ?
IMHO, if you can get a truck with 40k miles for around $ 12k that would be a much better deal than paying $ 8k for one with 140k miles.

Yeah, definitely.
Another viable alternative would be, if you have a good dealer friend or know any Auto Mechanic, take him with you to a local auction. You can get one heck of a deal if you have a knowledgeable person with you who can guide you. You'll save a chunk and still get a decent pick-up.
