Hockey is our National Game, sadly new generation when they see a Hockey Stick in the hand of an old man using as support stick, those kids ask what kind of stick is it?
We need to enhance and promote it seriously! ... we need to give time to think for our National Game, remember we were once Champs, we had once 4+ cups in hand, and now we are barely standing at 8th position! why? because of :
Less Money / reward for hockey players?
Less or No media coverage?
No Future for players after Hockey ?
No fields / grounds available?
No grooming at school level?
No support from Government?
No academies available like cricket?
No sponsors available to arrange regular tournaments?
What you think how we can improve Pakistani Hockey?
(ps: mods can we do POLL? )

My opinion on this subject is cricket is perhaps not the major attraction of the society and the new generation, as it was once believed (which was a fact all throughout 90's). A lot of people are playing a whole variety of sports - football/soccer - and unfortunately, hockey is at the bottom of the list. The media has played a big part in giving less importance to hockey while the cricketers' interviews take preference on their Sports pages. Also, what is the status of current players who are playing hockey? What does our bench strength look like? Are there any new players, future blood coming up in this field?
As for academies, cricket has, as such, no (professional) academies either, other than what you already may know (army school training facility in Abbottabad, our Lahore's national academy, etc). Let's see how the new government takes our sports and transform it (for the lack of a better word).

Since the intro of artificial pitches we have gone down hill, as Mostar95 says, but not just a question of fitness. We do not have the number of pitches (financial reasons) to develop talent in quantity from a young age as prior to artificial intro. In Europe these pitches are everywhere and there are lots of youngsters involved from school going age. The old game was really artistry and players continued at international level even in their late 30's, sometimes early 40's, now by around late 20's the body is kaput for top level tournaments - because of the strain on muscles, bones and ligaments due to the artificial surface.
If sponsors put money in the game to have these pitches in every corner of the country (or almost) then situation could improve.
The major reason is the introduction of artificial pitches. Hockey is no longer a game of artistry. Its a game of super fitness. And both Pakistan and India are weaker people.
Could this be said of South Koreans, are they also weaker?
Haven't the South Koreans improved as a hockey nation compared to Pakistan and Indian declining?
No other sports has kept (and will ever keep) the green moonstar flag as high as hockey has done.
4 World Cups
3 Olympic Gold Medals
7 or 8 Asian Gold Medals
Favourable match balance against every other team (except Holland) I think. But it is fastly deteriorating now.
But Pakistan public has not given due attention to the sport so far.
Pakistan's team during 1978-1980 was the most superb hockey team ever produced by this country. It remained almost victorious against every other team during those two years with tennis margin wins over Australia and the Netherlands. Unfortunately we did not participate in the Moscow Olympics games then otherwise we would have won the three titles at a time - World Cup, Olypmics and Champions Trophy.

Mostar please give them a little more credit than that. Our hockey team was near invincible (I would say) till about the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Several senior players (incl. Samiullah and Manzoor Junior) barring Hassan Sardar retired after that event and by 1986 our hockey was in decline.

I think many of the options listed above are inter-linked, so it was hard for me to decide which option to go for. In the end I voted for 'no support from the government'

Actually our decline had already started after 1980. We had very bad results in 1981-1984 Champions Tropy. Our perfomance at the 1984 Olympics was not of that quality that used to be in 1978-1980. We only luckily got through the semi final due to other teams lacklustre.

The players nowadays are motivated by money. Pakistani Hockey main paisa bohat kam hai banisbat Cricket kay. Hockey Leagues in Holland for example pay a lot more then our national side and dead ball specialist Sohail Abbas took advantage of that (regardless of whether the Hocket Fed' mistreated him). Secondly the PHF needs to be revamped (Mir Jamali and co' out!). What does contract killer Jamali know about Hockey? We need proper fitness coaches for the players. Boot camp style training would help beef up the stamina of the single pasli's in the side. Media overage is a non issue for me as once we start getting the results then broadcasters will show interest; as we are on a steady decline nobody is interested in giving the boys air time.
