PIA is the only airline in the world where Reservation is the most difficult task and most of the complaints against it pertain to Reservation. Since decades complaints both at home and from abroad through letter to Editors keep appearing. Both ordinary man and businessmen have the same problem. The Federal Ombudsman once observed that while people were standing at airport On Chance, inside the plane there were dozens of seats vacant. A group of LHC judges traveling Multan to Lahore found that while they got seats confirmed only after lot of problems the flight took off with many vacant seats. Both the Federal Ombudsman and those LHC Judges issued notices to PIA but what happened at least I do not know nor do I wish to know. A few months back thrice I visited PIA Karachi only to know I was still in waiting list for going abroad. Inside the wide body airbus there were only 17-18 passengers. On my complaint I was informed it was being investigated but as usual nothing was ever heard.

Recently my wife was to go to a Middle East country. PIA like in all fields of our economy say like banks in order to show increased income have created many divided classes within the Economy Class. While seat design-manufacturer, seat measurement, distance between two seats, meal etc all remain the same, fares within the same plane corridor differ in thousands. I wished my wife to book on “N” class the lowest. My agent told me PIA had blocked computer access to “N” class only to first sell higher class tickets. However on my request he put me on the waiting list. I approached PIA Head Office for confirmation of this waiting list code when the Incharge PIA Contact Center told me “your” agent had not mentioned expiry date of provisional booking which is illegal hence the code provided can not be confirmed. I informed the Incharge that the Agent was not “mine” but appointed by PIA hence any fault by agent is fault of the Principal/PIA. But the PIA Contact Centre Incharge kept on his stand. I contacted PIA UAN for reservation only to find flight was fully booked. I went on PIA web site seat availability system only to find no seat whatsoever in Economy was available. Five minute later I explained this to a friend who within next 5 minutes booked me on a confirmed seat in “Y” Class (a division in Economy). It did not surprise me at all that only 5 minutes ago PIA web and UAN was telling me the flight was fully booked. The “Y” class had about Rs. 7000 excess which under no circumstances I wished to pay out of my Rize-e-Hilal.

This difference between website/UAN and practical was convincing me that the seats in N class were available. I contacted Senator Nisar Memon, Chairman Senate Committee on Defence requesting him to help in getting a seat. He was surprised why just for a small reservation matter he was approached. I respectfully requested him to visit President of Pakistan website and read only one entry on it amongst dozens and dozens. I specifically quoted him to read from a 70 plus years old sick heart patient saying right from telephone exchange to Karachi Phone GM he had approached for removal of phone fault but of no result. He finally approached the President. I questioned Mr. Memon can in any other country world over any one think of approaching Head of the State just for removal of a phone fault. If this is quoted in any other country like Iran, Saudia, or Sri Lanka let alone Europe people may perhaps laugh on your face. I told him where just for a small phone fault or issuance of an ID card people need to approach Head of State due to “good governance prevailing in abundance” a passenger’s approach to a Senator should not be any surprise.

For a week later daily twice I went to PIA web site to find same story not even a single time I found a seat available. However using friendship I did get twice Y class confirmation and finally I got “T” class (second lowest class). Had I waited a day more I would definitely had got my desired “N” class but due to situation in Karachi particularly uncertainty due to 12-May case hearing in SHC I preferred to buy the “T” ticket. When plane took off according to my wife there were more than 2 dozen seats vacant around her. Needless to add my daughter traveled a month back on a foreign airline at Rs. 15,180 while my wife for same destination in the same Economy class traveled at Rs. 17,800/- by PIA.

Actually, Biman is slightly worse regarding the reservation.

javed-m, Just try to think for a second. You got your seat reserved by WRONG WAY (sifarish i.e) and we are quite used to it. You are no different than all others (including me) who use wrong sources like sifarish blan blan to get the job done and that has a part to play in all this mess ..... !

Now dont tell me that you got it done this way becasue "KAAM THEEK TARHA SAI NAHI HO RAHA THA TO UNGLEE TAIRHEE KERNEE PARHEE" coz that will justify criminal acts like robbery, ransom etc of many unemployed people !

PIA needs privatization danda and you all will see how it suddenly becomes profitable and all such issues will vanish (double bookings, reservation missing completely etc.)

Sorry but I disagree, PIA has been misused by almost everyone in past, if I remember correctly President Leghari took a plane fully loaded with his friends and family to his son's graduation somewhere in US (Rochester?) on govt paid fuel/tickets.

PIA is IMO one of the worst airline at the moment. I wont be flying with them anytime soon. Would rather pay more and fly in safety.

i dont think safety is an issue with PIA, esp. with their 777's.
More like dependability of schedule, cuz they keep cancelling routes left and right...

      Right On!!!!
PIA was the sorta parent airline for Emirates when they started out, they leased them 737 as well as extended training. But the Paki. politicians have treated the airline less than a national asset and more like a personal convenience. Boom in the hiring of unnecessary and politically motivated employees in large number is what has hampered the airline's budget for a very long time. They need consulting, trimming of staff from the ground-up, and proper management of fleet, routes, and service.

I've traveled with them on their new 777 and i was absolutely satisfied. It's not so much the airline, it's the ppl running it that give it a tainted name and fame.

      Right on.

If I remember the facts correctly, PIA has most number of employees per plane in the world which is the basic unit to measure if the Air line is over staffed or not. PIA's employees dont serve it honestly. I have seen spoons, cola, plates and tissues with "PIA" embossed on it in many houses in Pakistan and over seas. I have seen people taking year long leaves (use its free tickets) and working in NY at a pizza shop....and so on .....

PIA need to be downsized and should be privatized. I'ld suggest creating 2 companies one of International flights and other for domestic flights. Its always easy and efficient to manage smaller units.

Here is the excerpts form an interview

"PIA currently had 198,000 employees and 42 aircraft, which worked out to around 340 people per aircraft, while in most airlines the ratio was 100-130 employees per plane."

PIA first its name should be changed when overhauling this giant.
I think govt needs to atleat privatise 51 percent shares to be run by private sector and cut all the free perks given to its own staff, Army, Press, and other govt lunatics. one want to fly, should pay full fair! as a universal rule.
shed some long belly staff to make is lighter to run.

      Dear DECENT6CHORA

I read many Pakistani Forums. The Pak.Org is one of the most favouritee of Pakistanis but at the same time I have observed this site though is heavily and actively participated nevertheless most of its membership comprises of “non serious” readers belonging to “burger generation”. Most of its readers/viewers either lack ability to read and understand or being from burger generation just read through a cursory glance, treating themselves wizards take it guaranteed they know all and start putting their comments.

One such Wizard is a DECENT6CHORA. I suspect he only have certificate from the school and can only see the written words but can not “read”. Holding a degree does not make one “educated”. Education is something else.

Being the Wizard he blames me I used “safarish” to get my seat reserved. I wish he had ability to read and understand. A safarish could had been had I used my influence to get priority from amongst the waiting list passengers and depriving one senior in waiting to me. Or using my influence I had got my seat while senior in waiting were left behind. Which is not a fact. The fact is had 6CHORA “read” the contents of my post, he would had got a new knowledge from my long practical experience that PIA only in order to force people to get costly “Economy” grade tickets block the lower rate seats and in addition the staff books such seats with bogus passenger names. Had he read he would had known the whole weekly twice a day I visited the site only to know that No seat was available. Whereas I knew as guaranteed that lower fare all seats were vacant and PIA was not opening the booking only to compel the passenger to buy costly ones. I used my not only influence through a friendship but also constantly dialing approaching PIA Head Office at senior level in writing with the result I was able to get a lower class seat which according to web site was not available. Had the Gora Sahib a real thing to understood, reading my post he would had appreciated my struggle reading that while my wife was inside the flight more than a dozen seats were going empty in the flight. Thus a reader with average wisdom and honest to himself can see I only struggled and hard struggled for my right and got it without depriving a more deserving person. This is called the struggle.

I have the courage to put my correct true name. chora Sahib is giving lectures that using safarish is the cause of trouble in society whereas it is the cowardness of people like Gora Sahib who do not have courage to come out with their true face and struggle.

No Air blue has come only recently. PIA's declined started in the 90s or even before that.
