As per GEO and other news reports. GEO tv broadcast has been suspended in nearly all over SIND.

Last year exactly on the same day 17th Nov 2008, GEO broadcast was suspended all over the world.

Musharraf Said before his Departure: "Zardari aur NS media walon ko sabak sikha dein gey"

so i guess the lesson has started, typical that no one accept the responsibilty of this action!

Yesterday on Capital Talk, Sherry Rehman, The govt's Spokesman clearly said that is have nothing to do with the central govt. or NEPRA.. The transmission has been forced to stopped in a strong hold of a particular area... she never named them.. nor does Hamied Mir, as they say thay lack evidence but all the hints they gave leads to MQM...

Maybe MQM was there to mark the day.. or may be because GEO and ARY were behaving like naughty child

Standing for what you believe in, regardless of the odds against you, and the pressure that tears at your resistance, means courage

So much for tolerance of Free Media by the government. What is Great Zardari, the President of Pakistan, going to do about this statement from Governor of Punjab?

Taseer badmouths media, anchorpersons

Taseer badmouths media, anchorpersons

Says TV hosts talk nonsense and media has become monster; Sherry says channels protection is govts responsibility

RAWALPINDI: Federal Minister for Information & Broadcasting Sherry Rehman on Monday deplored the closure of Geo transmissions in Karachi and its suburbs citing some problems at the source of the cable network as the main cause of its going off air.

She was speaking in Geo TVs talk show Capital Talk. Clips of Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseers conversation with Atiqa Odho were also shown by the programme host Hamid Mir wherein the governor vented his anger towards the TV channels saying the media in Pakistan has crossed all limits and become a monster.

Salmaan Taseer said the entire country had come under the clutches of the media, as it does not let any government work smoothly.

He went on to say that anchorpersons of these TV channels think of themselves as some godly figures. He said if they (TV anchorpersons) were in the West, they would have long been handcuffed and arrested.

He said the private TV channels disseminate disinformation. He said the anchorpersons do not take care of others respect and talk non-sense. They made people dance in front of the camera.

He said in Pakistan there are no Madhuri Dixits, Amitabh Bachans and Aishwarya Rais and that was the reason why these channels are popular among the people. The information minister however struck a different note saying her government did not believe in clamping sanctions on the media. She said there were some elements outside the government who off and on counselled it to bring the media under its control.

The information minister said it was the same day (November 17) last year when TV channels transmissions were scuttled by the then dictator Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf. Sherry Rehman said that TV channels had the right to complain and the media freedom was the central point of the Pakistan Peoples Partys philosophy.

Besides Information Minister Sherry Rehman, Karachi Nazim Mustafa Kamal, columnist Irfan Siddiqui and Secretary General Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) Mazhar Abbas also participated in the programme.

Mazhar Abbas said besides Geo, another TV channels transmissions were also forcibly put off air in Lahore. He regretted that the policy of putting TV channels transmissions off air had become a norm. Those with power are closing them down on their personal likes and dislikes, Mazhar Abbas regretted.

He said in Karachi recently, a magazine and a newspaper were banned. The PFUJ secretary general said the medias job is to point out problems and suggest their solution and it is doing its job responsibly.

Senior columnist Irfan Siddiqui said in Pakistan the media is powerful enough to defend itself. Today, TV channels are blocked in Karachi but the whole country is condemning this act. He wondered if the government was not behind this anti-media act then whether it was Baitullah Mehsud or India behind it. He demanded the hidden hand behind closing down TV channels should be exposed. Karachi Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal, talking over telephone, said the MQM opposed the closing down of the TV channels transmissions and took serious notice of it.

Sherry Rehman busy feeding BS to public. The reason of Geo going off air is more than likely political.

Yeah, shut down all media and let Salman Taseer gulp Pakistani resources a la Zardari/Nawaz Sharif.

So do our MNAs, governors and CMs. These governors, MNAs, CMs would've been in jails instead of assembly, governor house etc if they were in west.

Its because of the fact that they showed something against the MQM the other day and Altaf bhai immediately contacted Sherry Rehman and got them off the air. The same elements from the past dictatorship are at play here, and Salman Taseer, the Punjab Governor is just pissed because some inappropriate pictures of his son and daughter made it to the press, as well as him enjoying alcoholic drink at lavish parties.

This is an interesting quote from the article. It appears besides Geo, another TV channels transmissions were also forcibly put off air in Lahore.

So it is not only GEO and Sindh that is suffering from the gagging of Free Media by the government.

Geo blocked, govt clueless

In a statement issued on Monday, Qazi cited some reports that the blockage was a conspiracy hatched by the Sindh government’s political ally, which was pressurising the cable operators. He said such a condemnable action was tantamount to suppressing the freedom of the press. He demanded of the government to take immediate action and restore the transmission of the affected news channels.

Maybe it would have been better if the minister had simply asked the PPP’s allied party in Sindh and would have surely emerged wiser and well-informed, but anyway it was all the opening that Ahsan Iqbal required who insisted that it was the government’s job to provide protection regardless of whether there was a nominated culprit by the affected or not.

Of cabinet apathy, who blocked Geo and watch your backs

Really, how come ppl are so afraid of this MQM. Every time, MQM does their dirty tricks and is not even been intervened by anyone. Again, MQM is suspected of its silent game and the Govt is silent.

Last year, the famous 12th May, MQM did most of the damage in khi( I am not saying that ANP and PPP were not part of the mayhem), and still no one had the bulls to interven them. Even great president Musharaf was behind them by saying that MQM was just protecting their land.

^ Yesterday Altaf Hussain and Babur Ghauri were urging their supporters at a televised rally in North Nazimabad, Karachi to purchase as much licensed arms as they can to combat Talibanization. They are basically reenforcing their own militia at the grass root level to prepare for a possible break up of the MQM/PPP nexus.

Spock, I know all this, the point is that where are the authorities who can understand the situation and stop this bullies. I really fear that another 88-98 era is about to start in Karachi and Hyderabad, where thousands of innocent souls were lost due to the sindhi-mahajair pakhtoon-mahajir, ppp-mqm clashes.

I agree & it can happen, but its very unlikely. MQM got plenty of bad PR last year & the Chief Don of London went into hiding for few months & they can't afford another PR disaster or Don may face terrorism charges in the UK.

Life is a tale told by idiots... full of sound and fury signifying nothing.

This is the reason why Geo was cut out:

“Ataf Hussain had an event in London to celebrate the landmark victory of Mustafa Kamal to be delared world 2nd Best Mayor. Geo and ARY did not broadcast this event Live as per the desire of MQM Leadership that made them furious. Farooq Sattar, then ordered blocking these channels through cable operators. On contact by Chairman PEMRA Malik Mushtaq, Farooq Sattar replied that if they will not show speech of Altaf Bhai, then how (dare) they can run their channels”.

The idiots were also thinking of passing a city resolution for that racist mayor kamaal until the FP mag issued a clarification that they never bestowed such a rank on the 'nazum'.
