Taliban agrees to cease-fire while discussing Islamic judicial system in area

PESHAWAR, Pakistan - The government agreed to implement Islamic law across a large swath of northwest Pakistan on Monday in a concession aimed at pacifying a spreading Taliban insurgency.
The decision was announced after talks with a pro-Taliban group from the Swat Valley, a one-time tourist haven in the northwest where extremists have gained sway through brutal tactics including beheadings and burning girls schools.
Officials gave few details on the what kind of Islamic or Shariah law they were planning to implement in Malakand region, which includes Swat, but said laws that do not comply with Islamic texts had been suspended effective from Monday.

"This was the peoples' demand. There was a (legal) vacuum," said Chief Minister Amir Haider Khan Hoti, saying the change would not violate the constitution — which stipulates a secular legal system — or human rights in the region.
Several past deals with militants in northwest Pakistan have failed, including one in Swat last year. The U.S. has warned such pacts simply give insurgents time to regroup, but the country's civilian government insists force alone cannot defeat the extremists wreaking havoc in Pakistan and attacking U.S. troops in neighboring Afghanistan.

Is this the solution to the current chaos? or will it add to it?

The agreement is with Sufi Mohamed and their hope is it will end Maulana Fazlullah's (his son-in-law) (Taliban of Swat) violence and attacks against govt. interests and as well as move followers to Sufi's less extreme movement. The Shariah is not Taliban style but what is actually enforced on the street remains to be seen.

Undoubtedly ISI would be happy for Maulana Fazlullah to go focus his terror activities towards Afghanistan.

this is confusing cause the us and pakistan are fighting taliban terrorists and if pakistan has agreed for taliban to ceasefire and implement sharia law in notrh west areas of pakistan. will this move not anger the us? the us may feel that pakistan are befriending and harbouring the very people they are meant to be fighting against

I think US took Pakistan out of the equation some time back .... that is why they have increased the drone attacks as they feel that Pakistan does not have the political will to take on Taliban !!!!!!

it isnt shariah but kind of mix of islamic and local cultural judicial system.
beauty of it is speedy justice whereby each case has to be finished in 4 months time.
actually we got to know the fact that Malakand swat is mountainous area and people arent rich and its a whole day affair to move from a city to city even nearest if person is living around villages in malakand division, in current system which is corrupt where lawyers run supreme was a kind of headache for people spending whole day arriving at court and when they reach there they got to know that other partys lawyer has asked for adjournment.

as for best of my knowledge punishments would be based on regular laws.

to be very frank in my opinion our current legal system isnt ideal as well even in west its lengthy lawyers run supreme asks too much, and manipulative as well.

we had personal experience for a case where one of cousin was murdered due to a dispute fortunately for us we had resources and connection that proceeding went smoothly as they should be but its been almost three years and it is where it was after 3 rd month.

some times either judge aint there or lawyers requests for adjournment and it goes on and on and on..

Looks like Talibanization of Pakistan has started with the blessing of the government. Unless of-course people believe that Swat is not part of Pakistan?

PAKISTAN CAVES IN TO TALIBAN - New York Post

PAKISTAN CAVES IN TO TALIBAN

PESHAWAR, Pakistan - The government yesterday agreed to impose Islamic law and suspend a military offensive across much of northwest Pakistan, in concessions aimed at pacifying the Taliban insurgency spreading from the border region to the country's interior.

The announcement came as three missiles believed fired from a US drone aircraft destroyed a house used by a local Taliban commander elsewhere in the northwest, killing 30 people, witnesses said.

The cease-fire, in Pakistan's Swat Valley, hundreds of miles from the missile strike in Kurram, will likely concern the United States, which has warned Pakistan that such agreements allow al Qaeda and Taliban militants operating near the Afghan border time to rearm and regroup. The truce announcement came after talks with local Islamists, including one closely linked to the Taliban.
Speaking in India, US special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Holbrooke said the unrest in Swat was a reminder that the US, Pakistan and India face an "an enemy which poses direct threats to our leadership, our capitals and our people."

Amir Haider Khan Hoti, chief minister for the North West Frontier Province, said authorities would impose Islamic law in the Malakand region, which includes the Swat Valley.

Swat is a one-time tourist haven where extremists have gained sway through brutal tactics, including beheading residents, burning girls' schools and attacking security forces.

" Judges give justice, not interviews" - Rana Bhagwandas, 21 March 2007.

so do you also oppose the bloodshed that lead to the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II?

Will you also oppose bloodshed as the Taliban take over Pakistan while our pathetic army stays in its barracks..........

Pakistan Army has been proved to be a total fraud. Before I was a big fan of the Pakistan Army, wrote articles of it on wikipedia, blasted anyone who dared question the fighting prowess of the army, etc.

But all that has changed since the Army has been totally unable to subdue any kind of violence against these extremists. Time and time again, the Pakistan Army has gotten its ass kicked by these extremists and has lost more soldiers than USA has in Iraq and Afghanistan combined.

Pakistan is on a downward spiral into oblivion.

By 2015, Pakistan will be a failed state.

So finally, Pakistan Army has developed some sense. Its a small step in the right direction . More is needed from army's side.
Pakistan army must make similar truce agreements with Paktoons of waziristan.

so you are ok with these guys blowing up girls schools, throwing acid on girls, killing people, executing people, imposing harsh justice, banning freedom and democracy, and hosting foreign terrorists who are plotting global terrorist acts and dragging pakistan's name down and making it a pariah state across the world

you are ok with all this ?

I always suggested that most anti-Musharraf folks are actually closet-mullahs. Their recent support to swat agreement, is just another proof.
