Thank you for the thread Firenze. This is extremely important. The NWFP government estimates upto half a million refugees will need to be provided for.
Pakistanies need to step up and show the same spirit that we showed after the earthquake.

The way Pakistan deals with these internally displaced people is going to decide the future of militancy in Pakistan in my opinion. In the past these people were left alone by government and were living in camps which were run by people sympathetic to Taliban.
Gilany today has announced 1 billion rupess for these people, which is good step but i think its very little.

^ yep very much so.
anyone here donated through any of the organisations and found it to be doing the work? i am just concerned because last time with earth quakes i found that finding a reliable source was the most important thing to do in order to make sure help reaches those who need it.

well i personally would suggest unicef/unhcr/world food program. Unicef has a page up there specifically for refugees from FATA/Swat. I try to see if I've seen pictures of them in the camps (i have for unicef/unhcr). That means even if they're stealing they're still doing some good in the process.

the number of refugees has already exceeded the expected number.
1.2 million people leave Buner, Swat other areas
SWAT: As many as 1.2 million people have migrated from Buner, Swat and other areas of NWFP amid the ongoing military operation in these areas.
NWFP Minister for Environment and Forests Wajid Ali giving press briefing in Peshawar Media Centre said this.
Meanwhile, Chairman National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Farooq Ahmed Khan said arrangements have been made to look after 80,000 displaced persons coming from Malakand Division and tribal areas.
Relief camps have been set up in Yar Hussain, Jalala, Cheekh Faizan, Shah Mansoor, Hand and Pir Daga areas for the refugees.
So far 13,000 families have been registered at the relief camps.
Edhi Welfare Trust sources say that more than 92,000 families have taken shelter in relief camps set up in Hayatabad, Charsadda, Noshera, Mardan, Swabi, Malakand and other areas.
Pakistan Muslim League-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain has also set up a relief fund for the displaced persons.

Yes, a donation to most of these non-profits can not be for any specific catastrophe. They collect money for any and all events all over the world. The same goes for red cross & red crescent. On the other hand they say that they dont wait for donations for a specific event and have spent money already from other donors so it all evens out.
According to a study 80 percent of non-profits spend 90 percent of the money on overheads, so 10 percent of the money goes to the cause and 90 percent to administration. This is not true for prominent emergency relief organizations.
Personally I trust the Edhi foundation and usually donate to them.
