So. This happened to me today. First, a little background. I have 3 young uns, the youngest just starting kindergarten. Needless to say, I've been at their every beck and call every hour of every day since the first was born 8 years ago. I never go far from home, never go shopping to malls or anything, no salons etc.

WELL. My hubs has been away all week and I decided to get a pedicure for his homecoming. It was going along SOOOOO nicely - the gal had just started the base coat when my phone rang. It was skool. Eldest not feeling well.

I said I'd be there as soon as possible and asked the gal to finishquickly. I goose-stepped outta there and off to skool but it was 30 minutes after the phone call that I arrived at skool.

Is this awful? I felt like they were looking at me with doubts about my parenting skills. sheesh.

Would you feel as horrible and selfish as I do now?

Don't feel bad Momma. They just happened to get you at a really inopportune time. I think it's nice you were taking some well-deserved time for yourself, but unfortunately sometimes unexpected stuff gets in the way.
Here in the city it can take forever to get anywhere depending on time of day, transportation method, etc. And in the rural area I grew up in, my school was at least a 20 minute drive from my home. In a lot of places even under the best of circumstances it takes awhile to get to your kid's school.
Do you have anyone, maybe another mom or a close friend, you could use as another backup plan in case this happens again? You could cover for each other. My mom's parents were very active in our lives so we were lucky that they could always provide a backup plan for school pickups, etc., when needed.

NYC, I actually have a friend that I made over the last year and she's just great, her kids and mine get together at my house weekly for a playdate and we all have fun. YET...I;ve never asked anyone to drop off/pick up or watch my kids. Thats MY job. I'd just feel SO funny and so lacking as a mom if I had to call someone and say "I'm haviing a pedicure, can you pick up my son?" kwim? Better to be a bit late and doit meself...

Don't beat yourself about it. It's nothing.

I get where you're coming from. But if you're worried about looking too vain you could always tell her you're getting a mammogram instead of a pedicure.

don't worry about it! you're a good mom and you deserve to have some time to yourself. its not like you were off having an affair or boozing it up- you're obviously very dedicated to your kids. keep things in perspective!

Once in a while things happen Mom of 3 and you are a great mom who is always available for kids.Things happen and bad part is whenever moms try to get some time out they get in a situation like this.It happens but you are a great mom.

aha...so u never called ur parents from school so they can pick u up since u r not feeling well

well i have done that and trust me its way better than either seeing the teacher, or answer all the investigation that mothers do. in fact after u give a call, school take a very good care of u.

Sara, it took me 30 minutes to get to the school after the phone call, that was the reason I got the looks...but they prob also knew why since it was a bit too cold for any sane person to be wearing flip flops lol!

Thanks all, I feel better about it now...
