Hmmm, maybe we've had a thread on this before...mods feel free to merge....


My older one is growing and stepping into the world of "pretty things" where she likes to make her own choices. So far she has kept away from competition, peer pressure, TV ads and such, and I kind of like it that way because while I want her always to be trendy and well dressed, I don't want that to become the highlight of her life.

How do you create that balance?

my daugther likes barbie stuff .. and pink and voilet is her favorite colour .. but that doesnt mean she doesnt wear other stuff and colour combination.
where as I buy her favorite stuff in cloths but there is a limit to fluffy pinky toys or things like purses with makeup and other stuff that imitate grown ups .. then thats a no no.
thats my balance .. dunno if it makes sense.

I have an issue with letting little girls wear clothing that is more mature in style......I always wonder kiss nazar say she is being looked at, if you now what I mean.

There is no shortage of pervs out there.

I let her dress up in outrageous stuff at home and remind her that this is the limit. Outside is a no-no.

niksik i relate to you, my daughter wants to look nice and choose her own clothes. i had begun to worry that she may turn into a self obsessed child,however, she has seen some examples around her of girls who are very much into looking good and dressing up, their life evolves around this...she was very fascinated by them until i pointed out the not so trendy and simpler girls around her, upon making a comparison she realised that fashion is not everything, and that the fashionable girls were not the nicest of people...luckily for me it has helped my daughter keep a balance.

but my job is far from done yet, i always remind her that just by wearing trendy and fashionable clothes it does not make you a good person, its whats on the inside that counts not whats on the outside.

honestly, its disturbing!
it bothers me even when little girls walk around with nailpolish and lipstick on. its too much, too soon. no idea how i'm going to tackle it with my kids- probably what y'all are doing with the communication and setting limits, but what about when they're in high school and peer pressure is stronger?

part of the appeal of becoming a teenager for me, was being able to wear nail polish and makeup, and high heels, and follow fashion trends. if i'd done it all when i was 9, where's the fun??

I agree to almost everything said above..I have a 4 year old girl myself and I can see it's not going to be an easy ride...She already drools when she sees my lipsticks and eyeshadows and she usually wants to leave her long hair open at home while playing...Of course I have set my limits for her but then how long will we able to do it and how much of controlling is fair for them ...considering the fact that you don't want your kids to be picked upon at school for being under-dressed or not popularly dressed when they're a little older...how will we draw the line??? it's a tough one!!

I'm not a mother yet but for me, the limit would when my daughter would want to wear styles that imitate adult clothes...That's a BIG NO NO..I hate it when little girls wear 'sexy' styles. Kids should look like kids!

sgc....unfortunately the media plays such a huge role in this aspect that concerned parents end up doing double duty just to keep their kids safe.

I know that the most I was allowed to wear to high school was lip-gloss and that too because my lips would chap, crack and bleed from the cold weather here.

The road ahead will be tough for those that have daughters in this day and age.

My daughter so want Pink and lipglosses and whatever things but I always give her option like you can take chapstick for your lips. And right now I don't want her to be fashion diva so I tell her when you'll be teenager you'll get little bit more freedom.

what is wrong with these celebs? the kid is 3yrs old for goodness sakes... how many times do 3 year olds fall over doing stuff and she's putting heels on her? and she's wearing flats herselves..... geez weez

i have a nearly 3 year old, who thinks being pretty is leaving ur hair out. And this is cus i straighten my hair for work and leave it out.

Ive realised, girls try to immitate their mums the most. They think (for some odd reason) that their mums are the prettiest things they know.. so if u have ur hair out, they'll wanna do the same.. if u put make up on, they will want to do the same.

I limit my makeup wearing to only very special occasions, and for work, whatever light stuff i do, i do it where she cant see me. And, ive started to tie my hair up more often so she does the same.

U, as a parent, are their first ideals i guess.. and everything is secondary.

Also, i guess, limiting their tv time, or monitoring what they're watching really helps. If they are only watching things like sesame street and playschool.. or dora for that matter, i guess its ok.

I do always make my daughter look trendy and stuff, but never make her look maturer than what she is. Also, i am very conscience of idiots out there who want to have a perv.

Oh the other day when I looked at my 4 yr old daughter, her face was glowing...I mean really glowing. On closer examination, I discovered she had used the fluorescent highlighter on her eyelids and cheeks. She was putting eye shadow and blusher aaargh!

Noor is so keen on make-up because she watches me use it. I've purchased the drug store brands for her when she has asked and told her that she is allowed to use it for fun at home only.

I don't restrict her from it totally because I don't want her using it behind my back. I don't want curiosity and restriction to force her into a situaton where she hides stuff from me.

Actually it was not so hard to get off..at least not as hard as the time she used a dark blue marker to do the same and that time she had even put on "lipstick"
