I actually saw a very interesting lecture by Sh. Yasir Qadhi on such a topic...It's called "Debunking the Myth of the Male Bias"...you can easily find it on youtube...(unfortunately...I cannot yet post any links...)

it is imperative to understand that gender is different from biological sex. one can ascribe or not ascribe to specific gender or gender roles while being a male or female. and it is their assertion of either of gender roles that creates their identity, not their biological sex.
