What makes people sensitive/ strong?

-situations?
-their experiences?

if situations make one strong/sensitive what does it vary from person to person?

It's a combination of both (situations and experiences).

Also, if you think about it.....every experience involves a situation. That situation could be death, getting fired from work, marriage, divorce, getting an education, not getting an education, buying a car, having children, having an illness, buying a particular product, being robbed, abuse, birthday, jealous friends and relatives, etc etc etc etc. FROM EACH OF THESE SITUATIONS WE GAIN SOME EXPOSURE, WE LEARN A LESSON, WE ACQUIRE SOME WISDOM.................and we sum these things (exposure, lessons, wisdom) with one word called EXPERIENCE.

Keep in mind that sensitivity can include emotions such as anger, sadness, crying, anxiety.
And as human beings, i feel many of us have innate sensitivity (we're born with it). Imagine if a mother (after going through hours of labor) threw away her newborn for causing it pain during delivery. But most mothers don't do that. Irrespective of the pain she feels, regardless of the exhausting efforts this weepy whiny overly dependent and helpless being will require of her for the next many years................she'll take it home and shower it with love.

^And yes I'm aware that there are exceptions to my above examples. You have people who murder their children as well. But I was speaking in a general manner. Sensitivity is also innate.

Also, keep in mind, that one can show sensitivity without having a particular experience. You might feel sorrow if a friend loses his parents or if a character in a movie loses their mother to cancer. Although your own parents might be alive well and healthy MashaAllah.......the reason why you feel sorrow is because you understand the value of having parents.
You may not have experienced the death of a parent........but as a human being you know that death is inevitable and even imagining a life devoid of your loved ones is painful enough to bring about some "sensitivity". In such a situation, you are connecting to the other individual through an innate human understanding about parental bonds that came from the experience of having parents in your life.

To sum it up, I would say that :

1) Sensitivity can be based upon situations, experiences, and it is to an extent also innate (in most people)

2) Experiences involve situations.
