Greetings,

I just wanted to share some of my event photography here. I was going to post in the wedding forum but I am not allowed to post wedding photos there.

I am asking for critique, positive and negative. I am looking to grow my skill and ability and am open to new ideas and concepts. If you like something, tell me why, if you think it is poor, please share with me how I can better my craft.

Thanks in advance.

Greetings,

Thank you for the comments, however what I am really looking for is feedback on specific images. I am looking for tips on what you (my demographic) really want to see in event photography.

I am really looking for opinions from recent wedding couples, or those who are about to be married. This type of information is very valuable to me. I don't think I am allowed to post my wedding photos in the wedding forum, or my bridal pics in the bridal pics thread, so I am relying on those within this sub-forum for assistance.

As per the questions above regarding camera, lens and lighting, each shot varies, if there is a specific photo I will gladly share my set up.

Please tell me which photo you want information on and I will reply with the specifics.

hey pandya. please take the following as from a newly married person, who's also having her reception next year in the UK and will be looking for a photographer. not as me critiquing your work as it's just a hobby for me.

you have some really nice shots in there but nothing that screams out to me. if i was looking for a decent photog that hopefully doesn't charge too much, your style would be fine. however, personally, i prefer photographers that have a certain style running through their work that is immediately attributable to them and that sets them apart.

the other bugbear for me is that virtually all of the portrait shots seem to have too much airbrushing and softening/blurring on the faces.. that's a real turn off for me. but that's something you could easily lessen on the clients request.

you asked what i (your target demographic) would like to see - i'd like to see more photo journalistic style photos of both the couple and the guests enjoying themselves at the function. as a bride, after my wedding, i'd like to see photos from the day that captured emotions and those special moments.

hope that helps you!

Perfect! Thank you very much!

Mentioning photojournalism is very cliche here in the US. It is a term that gets tossed around a bit too generously.

A proper photojournalist will not have photos of
-a bride's dress hanging
-bride in the window under natural light
-ring detail photos
-flower details
-shoes, jewelry etc
-no posed shots

This is according to the WPJA (Wedding Photojournalist Association)

For my brides, they all want details! They love getting detailed shots of what they paid hand over fist for. Although I do shoot PJ style, and have a second shooter who does nothing but candid photos, I do not use the term photojournalism or display much of that genre simply because it is an exhausted style for my market.

People have gone back to a more editorial style, mixed with a bit of fashion. The PJ style is still apparent, but is not to be overdone. At the end of the event my bride and grooms want some posed shots to hang on the wall, send out on their thank you cards, and give to their parents. A real photojournalist will not take a traditional posed shot, it would be like asking a vegetarian to take a bite out of your burger! It would almost be an insult.

We like to mix things up and do a bit of everything to keep balance.

As far as editing faces, you are correct, there is a lot being done! Good eye!
Most of the images I posted above are prepared for large prints, and the smaller version was not prepared correctly, so the look will be overdone!

I hardly use any photoshop for brides and groom that have MUA, but there are times where a person has last minute acne issues or such blemishes that need touching up for LARGE scale prints. If it is a small print (8x10 or smaller) I don't bother.

I hope you have a wonderful reception! I would highly recommend Anil Tohani
Asian Wedding Photography by Anil Tohani, Award Winning Indian Photographer for your wedding if you like the PJ style! He is truly an artist! I think his rates are reasonable too.

^funny that you mentioned him! i did like his his style when i found his website long ago.

i agree with some of the points you make.
at the end of the day as a bride i'd like a combo of posed shots, carefully structured shots and photo journalistic style shots. it's great to hear that you have a second photog to capture all. if i could only have one or the other, it would be a problem.
as i said - i'd like to see more PJ shots, not only those!

i think if you can, you should display a few more candid shots so that potential clients can see the variety in your work. and correct me if i'm wrong but my feeling is it's more difficult to shoot good PJ shots? you can't lug all that equipment around with you and set up shots so lighting etc can be a problem.

i don't think couples-to-be are finding it overdone. to many, there's nothing nicer than seeing your natural emotions captured!
