I would like to know in what circumstances women are allowed to cut their hair. ( Just like men are suppose to grow beard)

I have heard that Muslim women are not suppose to cut their hair except for some very small trimming ?

I googled some of the links and will provide later. But so far what I have read, tells me that women are NOT suppose to cut their hair under NO circumstances ( except trimming and leveling ).

I was just wondering do all Muslim women know about this ruling ? Because even my own mother and sister, I bet they dont even know this. I was quiet amazed to read this.

      Some links

I usually find Islam Q&A to provide extremely narrow interpretations on most issues, but on the issue of women cutting her hair, their response was this:

      ====

      Source

1 – the ruling on cutting women’s hair. Shaykh Ibn Baaz (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

We do not know anything (to disallow) cutting women’s hair. What is forbidden is shaving it. You should not shave your hair but you may cut it and reduce its length or volume; we know of nothing wrong with that. But that should be done in a proper manner which will please you and your husband. You should come to some agreement with him on a kind of haircut that does not resemble kaafir women, because if you leave it long, it will be a lot of trouble to wash it and comb it. So if the hair is very long or thick, and the woman cuts it to reduce its length or volume, that doesn’t matter. Cutting some of it will make it more beautiful, which will please both the woman and her husband. So we do not know of any reason to disallow that. But shaving it altogether is not permissible, except in the case of sickness. And Allaah is the Source of strength.

      See Fataawa al-Mar’ah al-Muslimah, part 2, p. 515

It was narrated in Saheeh Muslim that Abu Salamah ibn ‘Abd al-Rahmaan said: “The wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to cut their hair until it came just below their ears.” (al-Hayd, 320)

Al-Nawawi said: this indicates that it is permissible for women to cut their hair short.

But women should avoid resembling kaafir women or immoral women when they cut their hair

      Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan said:

It is not permissible for a woman to cut her hair short in the back and leave the sides longer, because this involves disfiguring and fooling about with her hair which is part of her beauty, and it also involves imitating the kaafir women. This prohibition also applies to haircuts which are named after kaafir women or animals, like the “Diana” cut, named after a kaafir women, or the “lion” cut or “mouse” cut, because it is haraam to imitate the kaafirs or to imitate animals, and because that involves fooling about with a woman’s hair which is part of her beauty.

      Fataawa al-Mar’ah al-Muslimah, 2/516,517

      Hope it helps

i have seen mufti taqi usmani agreeing with this fatwa of sheikh ibn baaz....

on this site u will find a very weak argument on why cutting hair is not allowed for women....
      its lame actually....

i think the basic idea is to keep it at a good length so one can tell the difference between men and women....
women cutting hair down to the ears, i dont think i'll accept that....
Both Halal & Haram r evident but between them r doubtful things, most ppl have no knowledge about them. So whoever saves himself from suspicious things saves his religion & honor, & whoever indulges in suspicious things indulges in Haram.

^ the immitating the kaafir bit is a bit wierd..

i mean when u go to pak, most women dont have a label on them saying whether they're muslim or not... but they have the same hairstyle ie the ladies who work at my mamoos place are christians but they wear their hair long in plaits.. what would one do in that scenario?

because beta jee, once a woman cuts her hair down to ears, she, in my opinion, resembles men in her haricut, and that is not allowed....

What makes you say it is not allowed, when a Sahih hadith says it is? (if that website is correct)

      What exactly this hadiath means

Rasulullah (Sallallaaahu layhi Wasallam) said : Glory (to Allah) who
beautified men by the beard and (similarly) women by their lock of hair.
      (Takmela e Bahr Raiq vol. 3 p. 331)

Try hadith #626 in an English translation... it is in Sahih Muslim, The Book of Menstruation (Kitab Al-Hayd), Chapter 9: The quantity of water that is desirable for a bath because of sexual intercourse...

      Book 003, Chapter 9 Number 0626:
Abu Salamab. 'Abd al-Rahman reported: I along with the foster brother of 'A'isha went to her and he asked about the bath of the Apostle (may peace be upon him) because of sexual intercourse. She called for a vessel equal to a Sa' and she took a bath. and there was a curtain between us and her. She poured water on her head thrice and he (Abu Salama) said:The wives of the Apostle (may peace be upon him) collectedhair on their heads and these lopped up to ears (and did rot go beyond that).
