I am thinking of getting a Tattoo.

Basically my name written in Chinese or some cool saying.

I would like to know what is Islam's view on this?

Its not a picture of an animal or human but chinese letters.

So I would like to know is it against Islamic rule to get tatoos?

Tattoos r not allowed, I dont know if it's written in the Quran but it's in the hadith.
If you look in the mirror and don't like what you see you can find out first hand what it's like to be me.

Don’t you think you should be asking if tattoos are allowed in Judaism?

      Assalamualaikum,

The verdict of the Holy Quran and the Sunnah upon the act of carvings of any pictoral or fancy image engraved upon the body is forbidden.

First of all your intention of getting this design imprinted upon your body is not for the sake of pleasing Allah, on the contrary, it is for the sake of pleasing yourself, and seeking the pleasure of others.

We find that mostly those who had tattoos were those very persons who disbelieved in and issued unjust persecution to the Prophets of Allah. Especially in the time of Hadhrat Noah (as).

      The Holy Quran says:

"And assuredly I will lead them astray and assuredly I will arouse in them vain desires, and assuredly I will incite them and they will cut the ears of cattle; and assuredly I will incite them and they will alter Allah's creation.' And whoever takes Satan for a friend instead of Allah, he certainly suffers a manifest loss." (4:120)

Satan, man's open and avowed enemy, has promised that He shall arouse in man desires whose purpose is in fulfillment of no praiseworthy cause, and whose desires will be vain and unrighteaous purposes. The words 'I will incite them and they will alter Allah's creation' unanimously forbid the alteration of your or anybody elses body, and it also shows that it is the whispers of satan and his evil mechinations which are causing you to even consider fiddling around with your body.

The Holy Prophet (saw) dissapproved of any kind of drawings or fancy designs anywhere especially the body. He even once asked Hadhrat Aisha to change the drapes of the house because they had a design on them which could be mistaken to be gods or such. Upon hearing his dislike of the design, Hadhrat Aisha (ra) took them down and put plain curtains in their stead.

Anyway, this should be sufficient evidence of the abomination to draw any design upon your body and alter its original form from what Allah had designed it to be. And please keep on your guard from such influences and innovations that have never appeared in Islam and that have never been the practice of any of Allah's Apostles, and such things are were disliked and forbidden by the Prophet of Allah (saw) whose teachings reign supreme until the Day of Ressurrection.

"Say I seek refuge in the Lord of the dawn, form the evil of that which He has created." (113)

Say I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind...from the evil whisperings of the sneaking whisperer, who whispers into the hearts of men, from among Jinn and men." (114)

      JazakAllah, Wassalam

peace be upon those who follow the Guidance
Eternal peace is the Word from the Ever Merciful Allah. May celestial peace and abundant blessings accompany you perfumed with the fragrance of His boundless mercy here and Herafter.

      hmm...

You can't mutilate your body, that is clear. So tattoos are a no no right there, as a needle has to go within your skin to place the ink in etc etc.

I think those stick on temp tattoos are fine as long as they're not pictures, religious symbols, etc?

      I may be wrong...

Muslim with Tattoo: What to do?
In the name of Allah, the inspirer of truth,

Tattooing is impermissible, and the Prophet (Allah bless him & give him peace) cursed the one both the one who gets tattooed and the tattooer.

If one has a tattoo from the past, one should repent and seek forgiveness.

Ibn Abidin mentioned in his Radd al-Muhtar, that the ruling for tattooing (washm) is the same as dying one's hair or clothing with a filthy substance: after washing the area, it is considered tahir, and the remaining trace is excused, because it is a trace that cane only be removed by operation, which is considered a hardship (in terms of the rulings related to purity and filth).

The purification, prayer, and imamate of such a person would be valid.

If it is possible to remove without excessive hardship, one should remove it, especially if it has impermissible images, and because it is a sign of un-Islamic ways. But if this is not reasonably possible, it is excusable.

      And Allah alone gives success.

      --

      Hadith
Prophet Muhammad (Allah bless him and give him peace), "Allah curses the woman who joins people's hair with other hair or has her hair joined to other hair by someone else, and [He curses] the woman who tattoos others or has herself tattooed." (Bukhari and Muslim)

In another version of the hadith related from Ibn Mas`ud (Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet Muhammad (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, "Allah curses the women who tattoo others and those who have themselves tattooed, those who remove their facial hair, and those who part their teeth in order to beautify themselves, thereby changing the creation of Allah."

A woman asked [Ibn Mas`ud] about this, and he said, "How can I not curse the one who the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) has cursed when the book of Allah Most High says, "Obey whatever the messenger commands you and avoid whatever he forbids you." (59:7)

      Others
The great scholar `Abd al-Ra'uf al-Munawi said, "Tattooing is highly forbidden by consensus of all Muslims because it comprises changing the creation of Allah and rendering Allah Most High's wisdom useless, so it is deserving of rejection."

I dont understand why people like getting stamped with colors over there bodies. And such people are classified as the people of the modern era. Keep the religion aside. Tattos were a part of ancient civilization that we have left ages ago (thank god). So why go back there.
People who get tattoed today are seriously confused. They look like Fred Flinstone riding the Jetsons gizmos. Now how wierd is that?

      Mutilating your body, hummmmm,
Circumcision seems to be the worst example of body mutilation.
