Salam all. I was wondering about the concept of "nazar" --

Is there a Islamic basis for it? Please pass on Quranic verses and Hadith if you know of them.

    How do you avoid it?

Agar "nazar lagai" how do you get rid of it?

    Thanks for your help.

I would like to discuss the concept of ‘nazar’ too.

    1. What is ‘nazar-e-bad’? Define it (in the light of Islam).
    a. Is it (as they say in Pakistan) that if someone look/stare at you (because of your beauty, intellect) or your car, house, possessions, etc. then if you get sick, or something bad happens to your car, house, possessions, etc. then it may be because of someone’s ‘nazar-e-bud’. And then they say, ‘aap ko nazar lag gaye he’
    b. So is it that if someone stares at me with ‘lalchaye huye nazroN se’ and with jealous feelings, I may get sick. To me it sounds like a superstition (‘tawehmaat’) and Islam teaches us not to believe in superstitions.
    c. Is the above mentioned concept of ‘nazar’ only found in Pakistan/India? What about in other Muslim communities, do they have the same concept?

    2. What is the word for ‘nazar’ or ‘nazar-e-bad’ in English and Arabic?
    a. Is it evil-eye in English and ‘hasad’ in Arabic? But ‘hasad’ means jealous, which not same as ‘nazar-e-bud’
    b. I can only think of surah Falak, where we seek Allah’s refuge from the ‘shar’ (evil/harm) of ‘haasid’ (jealous people) that they may try to harm you out of their jealousy. But that is not ‘nazar-e-bad’. Or we can ask our Arabic friends about this concept.

Also what about saying ‘masha-Allah’ to avoid ‘nazar-e-bad’? Is saying masha-Allah to avoid nazar-e-bad or just to praise Allah that “As Allah wanted” Allah created that thing?

Thank you for your dua, Rehman.

K-2, yeah same questions here. I asked in particular because my brother has been very sick recently and Ami keeps blaming it on nazar. I have become more and more conscious about saying MashAllah. If nazar is a valid Islamic concept in Islam, what are some ways to protect ourselves?

    Sahar, I know this one...

Maybe someone can verify the correct source, as I memorized it but not remember the source...

    "Wama-An-Faqtum-Minna-Faqatin-Au-Nazartum-Min-Nazrin-Fa-Innallah-Ya-Alamo-Wama-Liz-Zualimeen-a-Min-Ansar"

WalahoAlam, may Allah :swt: forgive my mistakes, but this is what I remember...

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to seek refuge with Allaah for himself, and the greatest means of seeking refuge that is available to the Muslim is reading the Book of Allaah, above all the Mi’wadhatayn (the last two Soorahs of the Qur’aan, al-Falaq and al-Naas), Soorat al-Faatihah and Aayat al-Kursiy [al-Baqarah 2:255]._

Among the saheeh du’aa’s for refuge that have been narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) are:_ “A’oodhu bi kalimaat Allaah al-taammaati min sharri maa khalaq (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allaah from the evil of that which He has created).”(Narrated by Muslim, al-Dhikr wa’l-Du’aa, 4881)_

It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with them both) said: “The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to seek refuge with Allaah for al-Hasan and al-Husayn. He said: ‘Your father [i.e., Ibraaheem] used to seek refuge with Allaah for Ismaa’eel and Ishaaq with these words: A’oodhu bi kalimaat Allaah al-taammah min kulli shaytaanin wa haammah wa min kulli ‘aynin laammah (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allaah, from every devil and every poisonous reptile, and from every bad eye).’”(Narrated by al-Bukhaari, Ahaadeeth al-Anbiyaa’, 3120)._

It was narrated from Abu Sa’eed that Jibreel came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and said: “O Muhammad, are you ill?” He said, “Yes.” He said, “Bismillaahi arqeeka min kulli shay’in yu’dheeka, min sharri kulli nafsin aw ‘aynin haasid Allaahu yashfeek, bismillaahi arqeek (In the name of Allaah I perform ruqyah for you, from everything that is harming you, from the evil of every soul or envious eye may Allaah heal you, in the name of Allaah I perform ruqyah for you).” (Narrated by Muslim, al-Salaam, 4056)_
