Abu Jahal

Now this is one person whom probably all muslims believe, is the one who committed numerous acts of cruelty and insults against our Prophet :saw:

I set up to write some thing really nasty about Abu Jahal... but then I stopped. As much as I love our Prophet :saw: I decided my Prophet :saw: would rather me spend that time reading about Islam, increasing my knowledge and focus on what I need to do to make myself successful in the hereafter. To spend that time on spreading any knowledge I already have to those who may not have it.

There is practically nothing I will gain, by insulting Abu Jahal. The guy is long dead. Whatever he did in his life-time will be decided upon by his Creator on the Day of Judgement. Why should I waste my time hating him or writing about or discussing how much I hate him? Why should it be part of my Imaan to curse out at Abu Jahal? Will doing that some how show that I love my Prophet :saw: more? Will it increase my good deeds and make me more successful on the Day of Judgement?

And lets suppose, I come across a person today, who starts to sing praises for Abu Jahal in front of me, and says what a nice guy he was who always stood up for his tribe and all that, you know what I will probably say... I will just recite this and move on

Faisal, your response would be a good response, however I fail to see who would want to bring up Abu Jahal if he has nothing to do with us, specially after 1,500 years?

I mean if he was any part of my belief or faith, it would be OK for me to do so...But why should I concern myself with something which in no way makes me better or worse? So I would just ignore Abu Jahal as he is no part of me, my faith or belief, and it would really do me no good to curse him now as he is dead and buried...

i dont think abu jahal is a good analogy to make since he was condemned in the Quran. so believing he was a bum (whatever the religious term for it is..) becomes sorta part of our faith.

Yes, hence the need not to bother with him, unless by dissing him means giving him more credit than is his due, no?

Yes off course...The man is dead for crying out loud...To carry on fighting because someone loves him is foolishness...If someone does praise him, then so be it...Whatever he did against the Prophet :saw:, is a bygone and I am sure he is getting his just desserts for that...For me to start thrashing the guy who praises him is idiotic to say the least...

if he's bygone enough for people to forget trashing him lajawab, he's bygone enough for you to not call the trashers idiots , and in other people's instances go flailing about at the top of their voices on and on and on and on...

he's bygone.. isnt he? what does it matter. doesnt affect your personal life or mine what is said about him.

I suppose you are mentioning Abu Lahab because he is specifically mentioned in the Quran.

To answer your question, my response will be exactly the same, in substance. I will just say that the Quran talks about Abu Lahab in such and such verse. I am not going to waste my time on cursing Abu Lahab or showing how much I hate him, because frankly I don't think hating anyone is part of my Islam.

hey im not about to go around thrashing people who disagree with me. Id like to think Im a peace loving person.

but my point was- i'm sure everyone reads surah lahab and thousands will continue to, so, its not really a bygone issue is it? ofcourse it doesnt mean we start cursing, beause thats a haraam act in itself, but its there so we can take lessons from it for ourselves, our aakhirat. we all know neither our praises nor our curses are gonna affect him, or any other Abu's. so its futile even bothering.

Faisal, i agree, hate doesnt come at the click of the finger, so its even more difficult to hate someone you dont know personally. even when i read or hear the kerbala event, its more an emotion of sadness than the feeling of anger, hate or revenge. but what i do get out of it is how to better myself, it renews my spirit in my faith, and humbles me, my problems become minute compared to what they went through. really, If bygones were bygones, there'd be no islam today.

otherwise i agree with you, if its just for bashing, it becomes a waste of time.

Well, thats kinda my point as well. Learning from historical events is one thing, but to spend considerable time and energy in hating and cursing people, who are long dead, and whose deeds are with their Creator, does not sound like a terribly exciting idea. We should be spending that time in doing something productive about it. And if someone wants to give those people respect, I couldn't care less. My not fighting with those people is not going to weaken my imaan. I defend the honor of my Prophet :saw: to the best of my abilities, but I am under no obligation to start cursing his enemies just to prove my love for him. As I said before, hate and cursing is not part of my imaan. And hating other people (especially dead people) and cursing them at all available opportunities is not what Islam is all about. Islam is a deen of peace and love.

Its a good thread so far. No I really really don't want to
make a habit of cursing anybody.It just don't seems right.

I remember reading about Hadhrat Abu Bakar's

life account. And I read one incident where he

gave a speech over an argument by few muslims who were denying the act of "Am'r Bil Ma'aroof wa nahee unil Munkar" on the basis of the last ayaah of Surah AL-Kafiroon "Lakum Denokum walay Yadeen" (i.e., rejecting rest of the places in Quran without looking at the context of this ayah).. He

made it clear in his speech (what I read) that this ayaah applies after you let people know if what they are doing is wrong... After that it's between them and ALLAH:swt:...

how many of you know that son of abu jahal was a famous sahbai.....hadrat akrama bin abu jahal

..(if u dont agree with this..dont start cursing him) ..the point is.....the worst enemy of islam ..called firoon of this ummah had a son who later on become one of the greatet sahbi mujahid along with hadrat khalid bin waleed....

cant we discus these positive things...rather then cursing some one who died thousand years ago....
