Hi,
I had another question - again a result of prolonged discussions with my parents.
Is birth control allowed in Islam?
I don't know how well regarded Zakir Naik is over here - but here's what he thinks:
http://www.forumpakistan.com/is-fami...se-t11045.html
It seems like permanent methods - sterilization for men/women are not allowed. What about condoms, IUD's, morning after pill and the sort.
I'd also like to hear from members here who don't know the official policy of their sect - lets say you get married and already have two children - or however many you thought you wanted - would you practice birth control to make sure you don't have any more?
Thanks

zakir naik is usually not well regarded here (not me but generally)
from what i have read..
temporary methods are allowed..whereas permanent methods are not allowed...
the intentions for birthcontrol......if are for spacing the childbirth....are totally ok...
but there is disagreemetn with regard to the 'intentions' behind birthcontrol.............
Thats what i gathered from reading stuff............it could be wrong..

Sir in most birth control cases in Pakistan reason for doing is that people fear that how will they feed their children but ALLAH says in the Quran that ALLAH is the one who give you rizq and ALLAH will also give them rizq giving rizq is totally a feature of ALLAH and if anyone thinks he is the provider than he is doing the shirk

You're absolutely right mukobhai - birth control is practiced by those people who fear they will not be able to provide for their children. If you search for birth control zakir naik - in the videos/articles - he says that people should not be worried about having more children as rizq is determined by Allah. He ends with asking if you think you can plan better than Allah then go ahead with birth control. Of course no one can plan better than Allah so his question is a clever question indeed.
However I think we have to be pragmatic - already Pakistan has shortages of food - water and electricity. If we keep on having babies our population will become unmanageable, uneducated, unfed.
Mukobhai - you mention that birth control is indirectly shirk - can you please, please provide a reference for this claim? In real life you might be an alim or a mufti - however it doesn't say so on your profile - and hence in religious matter I cannot take your word as the final word unless you back it up with either a reference from the Quran or some religious scholar.
Thanks

Sir by giving this logic of food shortage you have proven my point Rizq is determined by ALLAH it has nothing to do with producing babies Islam clearly states that ALLAH provides Rizq to everyone and secondly you said about the link sir just use common sense if some is going for birth control directly or indirectly thinking he will be to provide good food to less children he is basically thinking he is the provider of rizq and that is shirk

Mukobhai - in order to feed our families we have to go and buy food from the market - it does not show up at our houses on its own. If we leave everything on Allah because he will provide it - then we might as well all sit at home?
I guess mukobhai we will have to agree to disagree until we can hear some opinions from other people as well.

ALLAH has asked to work hard but still rizq depends on him alone so it has nothing to with how many children you have as a matter of fact you may become lucky with more children because in the time of Hazrat MUHAMMAD SAW a man came to him and said I have great shortage of rizq HAZRAT MUHAMMAD SAW asked him to get married so got married than he came back and still I am facing shortage of Rizq HAZRAT MUHAMMAD SAW again asked him to get married he got married second time and than again he returned with the same question and got the same answer and when he married third time that was the lucky time and than he became one of the rich guy of that time

Mukobhai - if Allah has taken the responsibility of providing Rizk to as many children as may be born - then He has placed a great trial on the people of Pakistan.
I do not believe Allah has placed us in a trial - rather that our current and future over population is a result of us not adopting birth control - having too many children means a family spends lesser per child on education - health and food. And as a result we have some of the highest numbers of poor uneducated and unhealthy children in the World.

mukobhai
why don't you give any reference when asked? why do you always come up with some sort of BS?Their greeting on the Day they shall meet Him will be Salam!" (33:44)

If birth control is haram or "shirk" then we wouldn't have seen the sahabas practicing it. Jabir (RA) said: “We used to practice (‘Azl) coitus interruptus during the days when the Qur’an was being revealed” and “We used to practice coitus interruptus during the lifetime of Allah’s Messenger while the Qur’an was being revealed.” (Sahih Bukhari vol. 7, Hadith no. 136)
The Prophet (PBUH) said: "Whoever loves to meet Allah, Allah will love to meet him" [Sahih Al-Bukhari]

Also, who said that fear of not being able to provide for children is the only reason people use birth control? What about other factors such as the mother's health, or giving time to strengthen the relationship between the spouses?

Islam is a very practical religion , its a way of life . Birth control is very much allowed and advised .
Islam talks about the "Health" of the Mother first and foremost and birth control is an extension of that. A woman reproducing year in year out cannot maintain the sort of physical or mental health that a woman who practices some kind of birth control method and neither can she nurture her offspring properly.....again something that is clearly outlined as a mother'r responsibility.........
The dilemma arises between the modes of birth control methods employed and here again Islam is clear about preaching temporary methods and nothing permanent or irreversible...........However having said that it again goes back to the issue of "Mother's Health" FIRST and so in cases where the mother is at risk in the event of a future pregnancy then in those cases even permanent sterilization can also be advocated . Any sort of permanent birth control that is not for medical reasons is forbidden.

Ofcorse its allowed.. otherwise earth would have been over poppulated

Yes it is allowed .. Cant remember the reference at the moment but narrations are present in which it states that the companions performed ''azal'' i.e. they retracted just before ejaculation. Its just that there are modern ways now to perform 'azal'.. azal with ain"My dear heart never think you are better than others. Listen to their sorrows with compassion. If you want peace, don't harbour bad thoughts do not gossip and don't teach what you do not know." [Maulana Rumi]
