5 things to constitute a sound heart (Qalb-e-Saleem):
1. To be able to spend in the way of Allah (swt), i.e. having a giving nature
2. To guide ones family towards truth, i.e. to promote virtue & prohibit vice
3. A heart free from carnal desires, i.e. He is slave of Allah & not of his nafs.
4. A heart free from corrupted & distorted beliefs.
5. A heart not inclined to anything else more than Allah (swt).
Initial steps for attaining a pure heart:
To make Taubah (repentance). There are 3 requirements for repenting:
1. Remove yourself from the sin that you are doing.
2. Feel regret – Nadamat
3. Make a resolution to never return to that sin.
4. If you have wronged anyone then ask for forgiveness & do amendments.
Symptoms of a sick heart:
- Making false gods (e.g. Nafs)
- Love of wealth
- Love for fame
- Love of fulfilling lustful desires
Steps to abstain from sin:
1. Be in the company of Ahlullah (saints, pious people).
2. Constantly remember Allah (swt).
3. Be in public the same way one is in private (No hypocrisy).
4. Recite the Holy Qur’an regularly.
Read not to contradict and confute, not to believe and take for granted, not to find talk and discourse, but to weigh and consider. Inhale positive, exhale negative

can you elaborate on this point? should it be "be in private the same way one is in public"?

I think this is talking about the concept of RIYYA (doing actions which shud be for Allah for other ppl instead)
eg prolonging prayer in masjid
eg praying nawafil in mosque but not at home
I did a radio show on this, and typed up the note.....I would seriously recommend having a read, if you arent aware of this concept...

In private he "consistently" uses prohibited ways of fulfilling his immoral desires "without any feeling of guilt" (watching bad movies..etc.), but present himself to be all pious in front of people (in order to achieve more appreciation and respect) as if he has never committed any sin. Criticizing people in public for sins he privately commits when no human is watching. In short, people consider him the most pious because of how he displays himself to be pious, but in reality he might be the worst among them.
Note: That doesn't mean he should disclose his past private sins (which he repented for) to people, but he should not be double faced. He should remain humble in front of people and not display his good deeds.
Just my understanding, I might be wrong.
Waiyyakum ya akhi.

Well said. JazakAllah khair. Another example can be:
He is very rude and disrespectful towards his wife when alone at home, but behaves all polite and respectful when talking to his wife in front of other people. (in order to impress people )
