really?.. do you confirm that they are your Lord when bowing down? you dont do wuzzu, and do the sajda to greet them , or do you?
God judge you with the intention u have in ur heart.

^Ofcourse, I understand that. I was saying that as a symbolic gesture, it might be considered haraam.

^ I see. So the big thing is intent, and not the symbolic gesture itself. Ok.

Like everyone said intention is what counts but still who says you ' have to'? If you don't want to, you can just nod or smile.

In Mughal Era....Bowing Dowing was symbol of respect....It was done for Kings...This is only a cultural thing and if Muslims can do it to Muslims then whats wrong in doing with Japanese.
If I was you I would say Assalam o Alaikum...and if chinese ask...chi chua cha....(what did you just say) just reply I said Peace be on you.
Love for All Hatred for None
P.S What I write above in post are my personal views only.

meeting everyone is haraam. you are not supposed to walk out of your home without doing any haraam thing. so just dont leave your house. oh, and keep your eyes closed because you might see some haraam things. keep your nose closed because you might smell some haraam things. etc etc.
the game of snakes and ladders captures the eternal truth that for every ladder there is a snake waiting around the corner. and for every snake there a ladder will compensate.

Bowing is an act of ibadah and Muslims perform it in their Salaahhs; the Rokuu.
Quote:
....But bowing is not permitted, unless the person being greeted is old and is unable to stand up, or is one of your parents and you do not want to make him or her stand up to shake your hand or embrace you. So if you bow and kiss his head or forehead out of respect for the rights that he has over you, then this is not the kind of bowing that constitutes an act of worship. Undoubtedly bowing is an act of worship towards Allaah, as in rukoo’ (the bowing in prayer), so if that is done without shaking hands or kissing, it is an act of veneration towards that person and is therefore shirk.
