Why are Hindus so ignorant about Hinduism?
Due to lack of knowledge, the majority of Hindus see Hinduism mainly as rituals, satsanghs and festivals. Without an awareness of the rich philosophy, teachings, values, ethics, etc, of Hinduism, and with the constant bombardment in the media of negative steoreotypes, it is not surprising that many young people of Hindu ancestry do not show an enthusiasm for their religion.

i think it is better than being sterotyped of a religion.
in fact no one compells us to learn religion at a childhood stage.

See Hindu religin's philopshy is too deep it's not like say few words and you become hindu.. So it's understandbale that majoroity don't get it.. Any field when evolves into extreme and philopsphy becomes too deep people find it hard to comprehend..
For instance not many under stand quantum mechanis and newtonian mechanics is common place.

Akam Satyam Vipra Bahudha Vadanti
There is one truth and wise tell ti by different name
Ashtadha puraneshu vyasasya vachan dyayam
Paropakaraya punyaya papay par pidanam..
In eighteen puranas only two things are vital, others welfare is punya while hurtiung others is paap.
In nutshell it goes against the basic scientific tenet of selfish-gene coined by Richard Dawkins
This is right cue if you want further information google is your friend

When I die, I want to go peacefully like my grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car.

Considering the diversity that exists in every aspect of a Hindu's life, Akam Satyam Vipra Bahudha Vadanti is a way of life for a Hindu, than some stuff that is learnt from books. So even if they do not learn the stuff, they generally live by it.

can anyone name ONE mention of the word Hindu or Hinduism in any Veda or Purana?
If one equates 'being a Hindu' to practice of Sanathana Dharma and being born into such households where it is practiced, why there is your definition right there of what makes one a Hindu.
Practices when underlying meanings or context is lost become rituals. Name ONE JUST ONE form of human collective that does not have a ritual or two?
Do you know what satsangh means? isn't that merely a gathering of good people? how is that a undesirable thing?
And festivals - is there ANY society that does not have festivals? festivals are at once a celebration, joyous fun filled colour scent and sound...upliftment of the human soul!!
Peopel are different. Some sit meditate and philosophise. Others cook feed and become happy when peopel eat and smile!
Some others seek laserlike precision in knowledge to pierce the veil of maya to reach and become the truth
yes - like the mathematics what we agreed to call Hinduism pervades life and living.
If you are alive you are Hindu

Again you are getting fixated with name no doubt the word hindu doesn;t figure there..
Technically speaksing it's Santana Vendant dharma.. Hinduism is bigger superset whihc includes in addition to religious various other aspects of culture of people of that region..
