I heard that its alright to play cards as long as your not obsessed with it or as long as you don't involve money in it. Yeh internet possibly wouldn't have been allowed. Not sure about internet being declared Haram to use but probably there must be some limit set to it or something similar to it.

i think there is a hadith which says that playing chess is like dipping ur hands in the blood of a pig
dont have a reference
My master is the one most entitled amongst creation to this matter by his excellence in religion, early merit in islam and close kinship with the messanger of God

^ Back then chess was played with dice and was a form of gambling and chance to progress the pieces.
If gambling is not a part of this game, if one does not forget essential ibadah then it has been considered OK.
By the way, chess was not introduced in arabian pennisula at the time of prophet (SAW) so any hadith in this regard should be looked upon with suspicion.

I can show you the hadith which says it's haram, but I am looking for a justification.
Sahih Muslim
Book 26: The Book of Poetry (Kitab Al-Sh`ir)
Chapter 2: IT IS PROHIBITED TO PLAY CHESS
Book 028, Number 5612: Buraida reported on the authority of his father that Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) said: He who played chess is like one who dyed his hand with the flesh and blood of swine.

Yup. It is mainly considered as something that will take your time away from other activities that are more beneficial to you. Hence best be avoided.

so if you dedicate only one hour .. and play it .. but complete the game over few days (people used to play chess through letters ..) ..would that be OK?
I think it should be ok that way, if wastage of time is the only reason

So should'nt test cricket be haraam as well? I mean we waste a good part of 5 days just completeing a damn match. And even then, it might end up in a draw!
But ofcourse, even maulvis like cricket, so obviously that fatwa aint comin!

^Excess of everything is bad.... if u see cricket day n nite for consecutive five days, you are not normal at first place. And surely this way you will make it haram on you.
If you can find time to go to washroom, n cant help but using it, eat food, even during watching cricket matches, then you can find time for your fard prayers and other daily obligations too.
Islam teaches moderation, its none of the both extremes.

According to that criteria, spending time on gupshup in arguing would also be haram.
Imam Malik(ra) considered bahas in awaam (debate among non-scholars) Makruh.
we should be ashamed on ourselves, seriously.

(Not taking away anything from the quote, it is true though.)
First people indulge in active discussion, and when it goes against their opinions they come up with the above. I wonder how would it reflect on their own activities.

Well, i guess people are not entirely reading the threads and its contents when they pop up with their most intelligent comments and their most honest opinions, that's why i stare at the same Hadees quoted again and again... Which is no doubt true, and hence pours a perfect symmetry and light on the whole subject... but then why won't any of the laterz just say, "hey, there u go "... instead of, "hey look, i bring u this"...
