Here’s what Ali had to say on various topics ranging from music, plagiarism, beauty and fame to Bollywood.
You graduated in art, then modelled, acted on television and then took up singing. Was this a path you consciously took or were you trying to find your niche?
You could say it was both because while I was doing all these art forms I found them all to be inter-related and helpful to each other. But primarily I always wanted to be a singer more than anything else. I went through this path to get the ball rolling and get into the eye of the media. I did modelling to earn some pocket money and also to collect money to record my album later on.
To what would you attribute the success of your albums ‘Huqa Pani’ and ‘Masty’?
I would say first of all God and then sheer perseverance, dedication and hard work. It is all about taking your work very seriously, not casually at all.
Has life changed in any way after your recent kidnapping in January?
I am one of those people who believe that whatever happens happens for the best. That experience made me realise that certain decisions which I had to make anyway had now to be speeded up.
What went through your mind during this ordeal?
You are petrified and there was this one thought in my mind that if something happens to me will I have any regrets in life and is there someone I have done something bad to or hurt deliberately. I was clear with that in my heart and conscience so I was fine with it.
Do you find this is one of the pitfalls of being a celebrity?
Yes, sometimes you need to pay a price for being a celebrity, literally.
You have been voted as one of the top 10 Asian hottest hunks and also the Lux Style Icon award. How conscious are you of your looks and how important is it in today’s world for a singer?
Well today’s world has become more commercial and glamour oriented than before but these are not exactly my values. I like people who have more to them under the surface as well, it’s not just pretty faces or good bodies that matter to me; it’s a lot more than that. I personally take a lot of care of my health. I go to the gym regularly. Looks are something that I owe to my parents. I don’t work very hard towards it because this is a requirement of my profession I take care of it about 15 minutes before my show or any public appearance. In those 15 minutes I’m gorgeous otherwise I just get out of bed and put on some clothes like a T-shirt, jeans and sneakers and get out.
Has Bollywood not beckoned yet?
I have received many offers, for a film with Amitabh Bachchan and one with Anupam Kher. With various artists actually but for some reason none of them were appealing to me so I have not taken them up. I am waiting for my kind of script and storyline something I want to do. I just don’t want to do any run-of-the-mill Bollywood kind of thing. I’d like to take my time.
What genre of music is your kind of music?
From the listening point of view I basically listen to everything. Personally I am more of an old-school rock fan and on the contrary I am more driven towards Eastern classical. I have undergone very basic classical training in it and you can’t help incorporating it into your music because it is a part of who we are. We can’t run away from it, it is better to have knowledge of it and exploit it to the maximum. Nowadays there is a lot of fusion happening with different kinds of music, the world is becoming a smaller place. Using a drum and an Eastern melody is fusion anyway because a drum is a Western instrument. Some people are more enhanced in that process and are doing great work, I too love jamming at my studio and creating, it’s a very interesting process.
Himmesh Reshamiya has copied your tune ‘Rangeen’, what do you think of plagiarising of tunes?
I have answered this question numerous times and have no comments on this. Plagiarism is not appreciable; be it me or anyone else in the world, I cannot support it.
What’s next in the pipeline?
I am working on my next album and which will come out sometime later this year. Right now I am working on a few more videos from the same album.
You are going to be judging the auditions of Star Middle East’s ‘American Idol in Dubai’? What are the qualities you would be looking for?
Basically the performance has to touch the heart. You can bracket it and make margins for marking sur, taal, performance etc.; for me it is the overall impact of the person. There could be a lot of mysterious forces behind that and you cannot bracket those, it is how it hits you. I think it will be very interesting and it is a big honour for me to be part of this show.

i do find him artistic and do find his work very selective....so him not taking side-kick kinda bucha kucha role offered by amitab or anumpum kher is not a biggy.
where as him being the judge of some Star Middle East’s ‘American Idol in Dubai" and look for sur taal...wah jee
ps. if that Star Middle East’s ‘American Idol in Dubai’? was really looking for sur taal then they would have had asked Ustad Hamid Ali Khan sahb. or Tina Sani."There are two rules for ultimate success in life: #1. Never tell everything you know." ;)

I don't think he's THAT good in music to be judging on a musical talent show! He's got the looks, but can't really sing that well IMHO.Best things in life aren't things..
