Virginia Beach in VA, you can go to Williamsburg in Virginia as well, see some history. Are you travelling alone with hubby or with family? Depending on where in Virginia you stay, you can check out Washington DC sites. Hmm dunno about Michigan.
New York you must visit Times Square, maybe take a ferry ride around the statue of liberty. Visit Central park, etc. Your best bet might to take a sight seeing tour bus ride so you can see a little of everything and get an all day fun pass to visit museums etc.

California .. it different than NY, DC and the rest of the east coast.
I know that you believe that you understood what you think I said, but I am not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

There is nothing to see in Detriot, Michigan though I do recommend Mackinac island near the upper penninsula In Michigan. Very doable with a 13 month old.

If you can work the timing, consider the new england area (Vermont) during late september - the fall color change is fabulous.
Why Michigan? Not much there
NY - read up on museums and pick the ones of interest

detriot, beautiful??
I was joking, all those cities in my initial post are major ghetto cities, crime infested, decaying crapollas.
now some of detroits burbs like southfield are nice but detroit itself is nasty.
Michigan is a nice state, very scenic, but detroit..well thats a whole diff story

lol really. Detroit is the the garbage can of US. The dumpster site is Jersey City though.
As spock said, Traverse City and Mecknac Island are beautiful places, specially for families with young kids.
Highlights of USA sites:
Smoky mountains in Tennessee or Black Mountain in North Carolina/West Verginia, Colorado Sprins, Grand Canyons in Midwest, the whole California State, Seatle in North West, Glacier National Park in Montana, Boston in New England for history lovers, DC for museums, congress library and capitol hills, Florida beaches (Daytona, Clearwater) and spectacular NYC (I mean Manhattan).
