Hi guys. I'm thinking of doing my elective placement somewhere in the UAE (basically a 8-10 weeks placement in 4th year of medical school, can be anywhere in the world). I'm coming from the UK.
The first thing I need is to decide on an area and hospital to which i can apply. Any suggestions as to where is best in the UAE. I want a place in/close to Asian population, good value for money (food, accomodation), large hospital...
At the moment, I've been looking at the College of Medicine at University of Sharjah. Are they linked to a teaching hospital?
What about Al Ain or Abu Dhabi? If I'm not in Dubai, I'll want somewhere that has good public transport links to Dubai... lots to consider!! All help appreciated

University of sharjah is good but just ok. I cannot deduce if you are a girl or guy but if you are a girl then the best medical college in UAE is Dubai Medical College for Girls. Excellent!
and then there is GUlf Medical College Ajman which is good and there is college of medicine and health sciences in RAK which is good too.
But if you have the grades etc and want to stay in DUbai and you are a girl or guy then you go for this...

I would suggest Tawam Hospital in Al-Ain.. it's affiliated with John Hopkins
Some days are a complete waste of make-up!

In terms of living costs, I assmue Dubai will be most expensive (small bedsit/studio for ~3 months) compared to RAK/Ajman/Sharjah etc... no?
They don't really look at grades, more the reference from my home medical school
I'll look into all the ones you've suggested (and will no doubt be back shortly with more questions!!)

Yes of course Dubai will be most expensive but do not worry after the economic crises and everything rents have dropped down up to 75% so there is a good chance you will find something reasonable.

The Harvard Medical School Dubai Center seems to be a post-grad research centre... is it actually a hospital as well?
I like the look of Al Ain and Tawam Hospital. Is it easier to get there from Dubai airport or Abu Dhabi? Also how would you get to Dubai (e.g. if I wanted to go to Dubai at the weekend?). Also I feel like I'll die in the heat in August and September (and it'll be Ramadan to top it off!!!)

nooo! I'm used to cool breeze and rain every other day!
The highway's fine but I won't have a car, is it expensive by taxi? is there no rail services or other public transport?

see here i got it for u!
Al Ain Bus station
The bus station is located in the town center near the Meat and Vegetable market. You can take AlGazal Buses to Dubai for 20 dirham’s (1.5 hr) or Sharjah for 25 (2 hrs). Bus will start moving @ 6 am until 12 mid night. The bus is comfortable and has A/C. There are about 40 buses daily to each destination.
