I am also looking for trustworthy home-based designers, tailors and wedding planners based in Karachi for my sister's wedding in December. I would like people who can do things within a budget and not be so outrageous as big brands.
I tried out a few big names who were recomended in different posts on this forum but they are only willing to work on the own quoted price. I would love to try out someone new but good.
White Roses, if you already have some info, please share.

Also, did anyone make their own clothes from scratch that is choosing the design, buying the cloth, having it embroided and stitched? Was it more cost effective than hiring a designer?
How was the experiance?
Any knowledge of working with karigars in Gulf, Jubliee market and paposh in Karachi? I'll appreciate any kind of help.

this lady did my clothes- rehana mirza. she's based in defense and has her own karigars- they kaam they did on my clothes was stunning- very intricate and fine and neatly done. she did a great job for me but she also replicated my wedding dress design and sold it to several other brides in karachi- hmph. lol i guess that the nature of the biz over there.
in any case, here's her number 589 4194 - bargain with her!

My husband's aunt did a few of my outfits sometime back. She runs her own boutique which is quite popular in Karachi and has affiliations/good friendship with some well known designers such as Karma, NS, Sobia Nazir etc so she always gets a great price on their clothes She herself is a good designer even though VERY pricey (only thing I don't like about her) but gives you the guarantee of good kaam, and therefore has a large clientele following. The only thing is that since her husband is posted in a foreign country, she is constantly traveling with him and is very rarely in Pakistan unless a family member is getting married for which she comes back for a few weeks to get all the clothes ready for them personally. Her boutique has a ready made collection of clothes you can buy but if you want to get them designed by her, you have to wait for that time of the year when she finally is back in Karachi.

Thanks, SGC. I contacted Rehana and she told me that she'll take time out of her scedule to talk to me. She asked me who gave me her contact number and as I didn't know your name, I just said that someone in Canada came to know that I was looking for a designer and gave it to me. She told me that she'll work within my budget but I don't know for sure.
Anyways, thank you for your help.
BTW, did you design your own wedding dress?
@shay: What is your aunty's boutique's name ad location?

Sorry, it took me long to reply because I had to get numbers from her. She has moved abroad now since her husband is the general consulate for that country. And she has shut down her boutique for time being due to noone being around to take care of it.. but she will still be designing during her visits to Karachi. I don't know when but I can let you guys know through pm or something when she's around.

I went through the whole process of getting the cloth, sometimes getting it dyed, choosing the kaam and then the tailors...its sucha big hassle....people always back out on their promises...the kaam walas...the tailors...
Gulf has some amazing shops for kaam. I got almost all my outfits done there...I had 2 months to get it all done...and I somehow managed...the cost per suit i would say was 6000-8000 rps...that included the fabric, kaam and tailoring ...but mind you, everything has gotten really expensive since this past December with oil prices rising further up n up...
Paposh doesnt have much...I wouldnt advice u to waste your time there...Kartaba on the contrary has some nice shops for kaam....and they are quite cheap too..
One thing about Gulf is that the kaam walas there have copied every single design off the magazines and they can make anything if you show them a picture...they even make bridal wear and copy the designer bridal outfits...You can get all sorts of fabrics from Gulf...so usually what I did was, I had a design in mind...I would go buy the fabric and give it for kaam right away...then they take about 10- 15 days for the kaam to be done...pick it up and get it to the tailors...the tailor would take about another 2 weeks considering December is a really busy season...
Kaam walas at gulf are considered a tid bit expensive compared to Kartaba and Paposh but that's where I liked everything the most....
Now, If it was all worth it...I wouldnt say so...cuz somtimes the kaam walas would do something else instead of what you would have told them...so It was really frustrating at times...
I know someone in Defence, her name is Shani Abid...she designed a few of my outfits and she was pretty good...pretty reasonable too since she charged me 9000-10000 a suit which is totally worth it cuz it saved me time and effort and i had gorgeous outfits at the end of it all...PM me for details....
what's sad is that some of my outfits from shadi are still sitting in the suitcases waiting to be worn...

Thanks for sharing, alishaht. I hae picked up many tips here and have sent you a pm. I'll be waiting for your reply.
I used to dress up in one of my shaadi outfits every month on the same date I got married and celebrated many monthly anniversaries with hubby. So I never had joras sitting in my suitcases.

^Sara, there's one in Jackson Heights.. there's this store that sells clothes/movies/cds (aaah I forgot the name) and they have a basement with a tailor shop. It's across from sabzi mandi in the kabab king lane. That guy fixed a couple of my suits and he did a decent job. He talks alot though and is kind of annoying so if you give him some attitude, he will stay shut.

i discovered a great tailor on gerrard (finally, WOO HOO!)
her name is sara and she's at 1308 gerrard street east, at gerrard and greenwood. she's got a sign outside her shop called "Expert Tailors and Alterations". she's quick and does a good job with clothes.
beware though, she lost her only son to cancer two years ago and she tells you about the whole, very sad, very painful story (i think its cathartic for her and helps her cope) -- be prepared to cry the first time you go to her! i felt so sad for her when i left
