Yeah, youre right and I have some Arab friends who suggested that she have an operation like you mentioned. Its common in Syria where my friend is from. She knew many girls who have done it. When I asked her advise about this situation, she said that if the guy she is marrying is an Arab then he will certainly TELL his mother whether there was blood on the sheets or not. Actually, i think because of my Arab friends..... I am getting paranoid and obsessed with this subject...

An afghani friend who got married about 8 years ago told me that her wedding was in a grand hotel in Pakistan, and her mother in law knocked on the door in the morning after the wedding, b4 breakfast, to check this handkerchief bit of cloth that they had to provide proof of virginity on, basically it had to have blood stain on it. When she saw it, she reported back downstairs where everyone had gathered for the formal day after wedding breakfast, and they all celebrated it. How disgusting is that?

Well, I don't know how common is hymenoplasty in Pakistan but I do know that sheets are checked here. Someone I know had her husband point a gun at her asked her regarding the non-existant proof he was looking for. The girl hadn't done the deed before but for some reason didn't produce enough 'proof'. That happened about 12 years ago and she is still leading a crappy life. (BTW, the sheets were checked by MIL in this case in the morning).

Ok, hymenoplasty is the way out but does it make everything okay? I don't think it does. How can one go on living like this without feeling guilty?

Even a hymenoplasty doesn't change much.. some bleed some don't so it cud be a lot of money gone to waste! I find it disgusting that people wud check..

I have not actually ever heard of this being done from any members of my own family who are married, or from anyone i know in pakistan, so may be it is restricted to certain groups, rather than national thing.

I think it is common in Egypt tho.

I know for sure about many Balochi families that it is a custom in their families to show the blood stained bed sheets to the guests in morning of the wedding night , I do not know if it is true for any other ethnicity of Pakistan.
