Does Mumbai, or India for that matter have Marine Police or something similar to patrol the local waters?

Where i live, (US) has Coast Guard, and local Law Enforcement agencies have their own Marine divisions.

You'd think they should Teggy. Why are we people never prepared? It's not like these things have never happened before. I know we get ticked off at US security measures at airports, but at least they are trying to prevent mishaps.

Yes there is coast gaurd ...... at the same time there are a number of small trawlers or dhows which ferry goods between India and the middle east. So these are all speculations at this time and things will be clearer soon.

I believe they do, I remember sometimes Pakistani fishing trawlers are caught if they are close to Indian waters while sometimes Indian fishing trawlers are caught doing same around/in Pakistani waters.

Well cubans, i'm not so sure about. You don't hear about them much. Mexicans don't use boats as far as i know. They come via the desert of Arizona, or Texas or California, where the border is shared. They have Border Protection agents that monitor the border. Before it was all footwork/driving around, but there's video surveillance in place now too i think.

Here you go .... and old story but gives you an idea ..... Illegal flow of Cubans to U.S. on the rise | U.S. | Reuters .. 4825 managed to enter US illegally from sea from Cuba in 2007.

For the mexicans, yes they dont have to go through the sea as it is easier for them to "walk"across the border.

The bottom line .... whatever one says it is not possible to "seal" a country ... People got out of east germany with all the walls and guns etc...........

The whole "arriving by boat" thing seems just odd. There are so many easier ways of getting into a city like Bombay such as road, rail etc where you are less likely to be stopped and searched. There's simply less sea traffic than road traffic; you stick out much more if you're in a boat.

The sheer amount of confusion over the boat landing is amazing. Some reports say the Indian Navy says it found one of the boats used, but that one still was apparently full of ammunition and equipment. One would imagine the terrorists might actually need ammunication and equipment? - Witnesses describe Mumbai attackers' arrival by sea | World news | guardian.co.uk
According to TV reports, the navy seized one Gemini craft laden with ammunition, as well as satellite phone, which could give vital clues about the attackers.

Many reports still say that these small boats were launched from a Pakistani cargo ship, the MV Alpha . But when boarded by the Indian navy, the Alpha turned out to be an innocent Vietnamese ship - Shuja Nawaz: Maximum Terror in Mumbai: Confusion Reigns
Earlier unconfirmed reports on CNN that identified the MV Alpha as a Karachi-registered ship that allegedly carried the attackers proved to be incorrect. The Indian navy boarded the MV Alpha and confirmed that it was, in fact, Vietnamese-registered and had no connection with the attacks.

Yet ANOTHER news report says that the MV Alpha was a hijacked Indian trawler and the Indian coast guard found its captain decapitated on board.
Mumbai police capture terrorist alive and claim he is from Pakistan | Mail Online - It is believed the terrorists hijacked an Indian trawler, M V Alpha, which was used as a mothership from which to launch a maritime terror attack on the coastal city.

Indian coastguards recovered the vessel off the Mumbai coast. The decapitated body of its captain was found on board.

Probably they were trying something that no one was expecting ...... you are not a terrorist so you cannot think like one .... now we all know it is a possibilty. Again i would say these are just speculations and let us watch how it unfolds.

Bravo to the brave Indian Commandos who now reportly have taken control of the hotel. India reserves the right to hunt down those responsible for planning these attack no matter where they are located and should be supported by all in doing so.

A distant friend was there staying at the hotel, she started working in the UAE this year and was vacationing in Mumbai. I saw her on BBC waiting helplessly as the airport, they even interviewed her and shes on a flight to Dubai now, and she vowed she would never return to India again.

Captain Saheeb good point, but how can you tolerate finger point of a Country like Indian on your own? I can not. I will not!
Now they have become Karachites, just coz India can not bare and publish that this very act was due to the months and years of killing innocent ppl in Kashmir! Free Kashmir and you will not see such things.

Hush! They used speedboats to travel approximately 1000KM. Docked the boats, walked to the hotels and even managed to locate the Ultra-Orthodox Jewish offices.

Seriously

Bashful

Two contradicting news/comments by IBN

Comment1: All the fingers are pointing towards the neighbors and terrorist looks like Pakistanis

Comment2: Security Forces tapped the communication b/w terrorist when one of the terrorst called other and said "bonus bhee mill gaya" (pointing towards the death of ATS chief).

Now it only make me think Why will Pakistani terrorist consider him as bonus? Do they care who they killed? For heaven sake they are there to spread terror. Only people from "inside" have may have said this if they have something to gain with ATS Chief's death.

On the side note this may be in real the situation like "One 2 Ka Four" where their en-counter chief was killed by their own men due to internal tussel

Man is NOT an investment plan

Its very simply. Such terrorist attacks are being coordinated and executed by buying off locals and let them perform operations. No foreign terrorist can be so sure about locations and hot spots for target killings.

Well if a guy called Sarabjit could just walk into Pakistan ... blow up bombs in Multan and lahore killing 14 people ... why cannot these people cross over in a boat . You mean to say ISI does not have the same capability as RAW !!!!!
