GAZA - A Palestinian security court on Saturday sentenced a Palestinian man to death by firing squad for supplying Israel with information about top Islamic militants.

Amin Halef Ala, 31, was the second Palestinian to receive
the death sentence this week. On Thursday the court sentenced a veteran of the Islamic militant Hamas group to death, describing him as the most senior Palestinian collaborator ever uncovered.

According to the charge sheet, Ala provided Israel with intelligence that helped it kill leading Hamas bombmaker Yahya Ayash in 1996 and then pinpoint the whereabouts of the current commander of its military wing, Mohammad Deif, last month.

Deif was wounded in September when Israeli helicopters fired missiles into Gaza City in a strike Hamas said was intended to kill the commander.

"Ala gave extensive information to Israel on most of the Hamas and Fatah cadres," said Judge Abdel Aziz Wadi.

Ala's death sentence requires ratification by Palestinian President Yasser Arafat. There is no right of appeal.

Three men have been executed on similar charges since Palestinians launched their current revolt in September 2000. At least another 20 men suspected of collaborating have been gunned down by vigilantes, drawing international censure.

Israeli security officials say collaborators are rarely caught, and decline to comment on specific convictions in
Palestinian courts.
